Meaning · English
The knower thinks, yet is without thought. He has senses, yet is without senses. He has a clear mind, yet is without mind, and has an ego, yet is without ego. He is not happy and not sorrowful, not detached and not attached. He is not a seeker of freedom, and not one who is free. He is not anything, and not even something.
Ashtavakra gives pairs, and each pair seems to contradict itself. The first word to take apart is chinta, thought or worry, from the root to think. The knower has it and has it not: thoughts pass through, but none of them settles in as "mine." The same holds for the senses. They work, but nothing is gripped through them. Next is ahamkara, the "I-maker," from aham, I, and kara, making. The text says the knower has it and does not make it. The sense of "I" shows up for the daily business, but no one is built from it. Then come the pairs of mood and stance: happy or sorrowful, detached or attached. The knower is none of these. The last pair is the sharpest. A mumukshu is one who longs for release, from the root muc, to let go. Ashtavakra says the knower is neither that seeker nor one who has been released, because both words need a someone who was bound. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. The answer is that the witness was never bound, so no label fits it, even the label "free." The verse asks the listener to stop looking for a better label to wear.
Picture a clean window pane. Through it you see a garden, then rain, then dusk, and the glass is never the garden, the rain or the dusk. It carries none of them away. The knower is like the glass: everything shows in it, and nothing it shows is what it is.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit and name the roles you carry through the day, such as daughter, worker, tired one, helper. 2. After each name, say quietly, "This is something I do or feel, and it is seen." 3. Notice who is doing the seeing. Do not describe it. Just stay with the noticing until the five minutes end. 4. Tomorrow, when someone praises or blames you, pause for one breath before answering and notice what you took hold of.
A retired schoolteacher stands at her own farewell party. Colleagues garland her, call her wise and tireless, and she feels herself stiffen into that picture, as if she must now live up to it. Hearing the verse, she could take the moment in steps. She hears the praise and lets it be words said by kind people. She notices the pleasure, and the small worry that follows it. She sees that "wise teacher" is one more role, as "retired" will be tomorrow. Then she can thank them plainly, without defending the picture or pushing it away. Ordinary experience confirms that we tighten around a title when it is handed to us, and loosen when we stop guarding it. The limit is clear: the verse does not promise she will feel nothing at leaving a life's work, and it does not remove grief or loneliness. The tradition teaches that the witness is unmoved by them, but it does not say the days will stop being hard, and it is no replacement for a doctor or a friend where one is needed.
