Meaning · English
For one who is content, resting in the Self, free of hope, free of pain: what is known within, how can it be told, and to whom? The wise one, content at every step, is asleep yet not in deep sleep, lies in dream yet is not lying there, is awake in waking yet not awake.
Three words carry it. Trpta means content, filled, from trp, to be satisfied, like hunger that has been fed. Nirasha means without asha, the hope or craving that leans forward toward the next thing. Dhira means steady, one whose understanding does not shake; dhi is insight. Ashtavakra describes a person who rests in the Self, wants nothing further and carries no ache. What such a person knows inwardly cannot be handed over, he says. Told by whom, and to whom? Words can point, but the knowing is first-hand. The second half names the knower by what he is not. He is asleep, yet not in sushupti, the deep sleep with no dream and no awareness of anything. He is in dream, yet does not lie in it. He is awake, yet not awake in the usual way. The text does not call him dull or absent. It says the three states, which seem to cover all of life, do not hold him, and he is content at every step. Janaka has asked how knowledge is won. Ashtavakra answers that the Self is the witness of all three states, so none of them makes it. The teaching asks the listener not to expect a description to do the work of recognition, and to look toward what is present before and after each state.
Someone tries to tell a friend who has never eaten a ripe mango what it is like. She says sweet, soft, a little sour, and the friend nods without knowing. Every word is true and none of it is the mango. Inner experience is like that: the one who has it can only point, and the friend has to taste.
1. Today, choose one thing you felt deeply, such as a moment of relief or gladness. Try to tell it to someone in three sentences, and notice what stays beyond the words. 2. Tonight, as you lie down, watch for the last thing you notice before sleep. Do not try to stay awake. 3. Tomorrow morning, before getting up, notice the first thing present on waking, before the day's thoughts arrive. Stay with it for one minute.
A new father sits on the hall floor at three in the morning, the baby finally asleep on his chest. He is not asleep and not properly awake. The clock, tomorrow's work, his own tiredness and the baby's breathing all drift past. Ordinary experience knows this blur: waking and sleep shade into each other, and a tired mind slips between them. The teaching Ashtavakra gives would change the moment step by step. The tiredness is seen as tiredness. The worry about tomorrow is seen as a thought that has arrived. Both pass, and what notices them has not moved. In the morning his wife asks what it was like, and he finds it hard to say. The text names exactly that difficulty: what is known within cannot be handed across. The teaching does not give him his sleep back, and it does not remove the exhaustion. If the sleeplessness drags on for weeks, or the baby seems unwell, a doctor is the right person to ask.
