Meaning · English

Beggar or king, the one who wants nothing shines. In him the mind's sorting of things into lovely and ugly has melted away. For the yogi who has become simple and without pretence, whose purpose is complete, where is doing as he pleases? Where is holding himself back? Where is any fixed verdict about what is true?

Three words carry the teaching. Niskama means without kama, craving: not a man who has stopped acting, but one with no hunger pulling at him. Sankoca means a drawing-in, a flinching or holding back. Caritartha means one whose purpose is done, who has nothing left to reach for. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that a beggar or a king shines if he is free of craving. Rank does not decide it. Then he says the mind of such a man has stopped sorting what it meets into beautiful and ugly. Things are still seen, but the pull and push are gone. Then come three questions, each with its answer left implied: nowhere. Where is doing as he likes? Where is holding back? Where is a fixed conclusion about the truth? Free choice and restraint both belong to someone wrestling with desire. Settled opinions belong to a mind still hunting for something to stand on. The yogi is described as nirvyaja, without pretence, and straight. He has nothing to hide and nothing to prove. The reason given is that the work is finished. Janaka has asked what freedom looks like from inside, and Ashtavakra answers that it looks plain.

A lamp gives the same light in a palace hall and in a mud hut. It does not brighten for the grander room or sulk in the smaller one. It burns, and the room is lit. The one without craving is the lamp, and king and beggar are only the rooms.

1. Today, notice one moment of ranking: a person, a seat, a meal, a task you called better or worse. 2. Say to yourself, quietly, "I am sorting." Do not argue with the sorting. 3. Ask what you are afraid of losing, or hoping to get, in that moment. 4. Once this week, do one small thing straight, with no angle and no explanation prepared in advance.

A man stands in the empty shop he has just sold, holding the keys he is about to hand to the buyer. For thirty years it was his name over the door. He is deciding whether to feel like a king who is abdicating or a beggar who has lost his living. The text would change the moment in steps. First, the sorting of the shop into prized and worthless loosens, and he sees the shelves as shelves. Second, the hunger to be seen as the man who sold well, or to be pitied, has less to grip. Third, he hands over the keys without a speech prepared for the buyer. He is plainer, and nothing in him is being managed. Ordinary experience agrees that wanting tightens a person and makes him perform. The verse does not promise that the sale will feel painless, that money worries vanish, or that grief at leaving will not come. It describes a mind that has stopped being ruled by craving. It does not replace advice from an accountant or a doctor where one is needed.
