One whose attention clutches nothing anywhere has no leftover impression in the heart. Who can be compared with that freed self, wholly content? Knowing, he does not know. Seeing, he does not see. Speaking, he does not speak. Who other than the one without desire could be like this?

Three words carry the verse. Vasana is the residue left in the heart by what was wanted, feared or enjoyed, from vas, to dwell: what stays on after the event is over. Nirvasana is its absence. Vitripta means fully fed, from trip, to be sated. Ashtavakra says the heart of the freed one holds no such residue, because attention is not gripped on anything. So no one can be set beside him. Comparison needs a shared measure, and he has no craving to measure against. The second half sounds like a riddle. He knows, yet does not know. He sees, yet does not see. He speaks, yet does not speak. Ashtavakra does not say he is blind or silent. He knows and sees and speaks, but nothing sticks, and no one inside claims the knowing, the seeing or the saying as his own. Only the desireless can be like this, because desire is what makes a mind hold on and say: this is mine, this matters to me. The teaching answers Janaka's question about what freedom looks like from outside. It asks the listener to notice how much of ordinary seeing is really grasping.

A clean mirror in a hallway shows every person who walks past, exactly as they are, and keeps none of them. When the hallway empties, the glass holds nothing. The freed mind takes in everything this way: fully, accurately, and without leftover.

1. Choose one ordinary conversation today, with a neighbour, a shopkeeper or a family member. 2. Listen to all of it, and answer plainly. 3. Afterwards, sit for two minutes and notice which words are still replaying. Name one, without arguing with it. 4. Do the same tomorrow and see whether the replaying is lighter or heavier.

A schoolteacher sits through parents' evening. One father says, sharply, that his son's marks are her fault. Her chest tightens, and she can feel the replay beginning before he has finished. The verse points to a different way to take in the same moment. She hears every word, because the facts may matter. She answers plainly about the marks and what could help. Then the meeting ends, and nothing is carried to the bus or the dinner table. Knowing, seeing and speaking all happen, but no grip forms. The verse calls the freed one's way of living this way, and it says plainly that only the desireless person lives it fully. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: the remarks we replay at night are usually the ones we were bracing against while they were spoken. The verse does not promise the sting will never come, or that her tiredness or the father's anger will vanish. It does not replace talking to the headteacher if the complaint is serious.
