Owning nothing, moving as he pleases, past the pairs of opposites, with every doubt cut through, unattached to every state of being, the wise one delights alone. Free of the sense of "mine," the steady one shines, seeing clod, stone and gold as the same. The knot of his heart is split open, and restlessness and dullness are shaken off.

Ashtavakra describes the knower in a run of short strokes. Akincana means owning nothing, not even a little. It points less to empty pockets than to a mind that holds nothing as its own. Nirmama means without "mine", where mama is "my" or "mine". For Ashtavakra, the root of grasping is that small word. Granthi is a knot, and the knot of the heart is where the self gets tied to body, goods and story. Rajas and tamas are the text's names for restlessness and heaviness, the two pulls that keep the mind churning or dull. Clause by clause, the knower walks where he likes, because no outcome binds him. The pairs of opposites, such as pleasure and pain or gain and loss, no longer pull him two ways. His doubts are cut, since he has seen that the self is the witness. He clings to no condition, so he delights alone, needing nothing outside. Clod, stone and gold look alike to him because none of them is "mine." Janaka has asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers by showing what it looks like once the knot is open. The verse asks the listener to look for the "mine" itself, since the knot is tied there.

A man has carried a heavy suitcase down a long road for hours, shoulder hunched and fingers cramped. At the gate he sets it down. His arm swings loose and he walks lightly. The suitcase is the "mine" the mind carries, and the lightness is the walking of the one whose knot has opened.

1. Tonight, pick one object you call yours, such as a mug or a phone. Hold it for a minute and say quietly, "This is only here for now." 2. Tomorrow, each time you say "my" about something, notice the small tightening, if there is one. Do this for one afternoon. 3. This week, give away one thing you have kept without using. Notice what you reach for in the moment before it leaves your hands.

A retired schoolteacher is moving to a smaller flat. Her son stands among the boxes, and she is deciding which things go with her. Each item arrives with a voice saying it is hers and that she cannot do without it. A steel trunk, a set of chipped cups and a stack of old registers all start to sound like parts of her. The verse would change this in steps. First she would notice the grip itself, the tightness that rises when she lifts each thing. Then she would see that the grip belongs to the word "mine" and not to the object. Then she could choose by use and care, keeping what serves and handing on the rest. The cups and the registers would stay what they are, and the weight would come off them. The text calls this being free of mine-ness, with clod, stone and gold standing level. Ordinary experience agrees that holding on tends to tighten when we feel unsafe. The verse does not promise that the parting will be painless, or that the memories will stop stinging. It does not replace practical sense about money, health or where a person can safely live.
