Meaning · English

When the Goddess had slain the great lord of the asuras, the gods, with Indra and with Agni at their head, praised Katyayani. They had won what they longed for, and their faces were open like lotuses, their hopes in bloom. They said: Devi, you take away the pain of those who come to you for refuge. Be gracious. Mother of the whole world, be gracious. Queen of the universe, be gracious and protect the universe. Devi, you rule all that moves and all that stands still.

Three words carry the plea. Prapanna means one who has stepped toward another and taken shelter there, from pra, forward, and pad, to step. Prasida is the cry repeated three times. It comes from sad, to settle, and means to grow clear and kindly, the way muddy water settles. The gods ask her to be gracious. Ishvari means a ruler or mistress, from ish, to have power over. Characara joins what moves with what does not move, so it means everything living and still. The story first. Mahishasura is dead. The gods, led by Indra and Agni, are glad, and the text shows it on their faces, which open like lotuses. They call her Katyayani and begin to praise her. They do not boast of the victory. They name her the one who removes the distress of the refuge-seeker. Then they call her Mother of all the world and its Queen, and ask her to protect it. Each name widens the plea. It begins with their own pain and ends with the whole world. The question this answers is what the gods do with a rescue. In the Devi Mahatmya they give the credit to her and ask for her grace again. The verse teaches that her power covers all that moves and all that is still, so nothing is left outside her care. It asks the listener only to hear the praise as the gods give it.

After a flood recedes, the neighbours do not go home first. They gather at the door of the woman who kept watch on the embankment all night, thank her, and ask her to keep watching. The gods stand the same way. They have been rescued, and they ask the Mother to stay as the protector of what she saved.
