Meaning · English

You alone are the support of the world, for You abide as the form of earth. Abiding as the nature of water, You nourish all this, Goddess of unconquerable valor. You are Vaishnavi, the power of endless valor, the seed of the world, the supreme Maya. All this is bewildered, Goddess, and when You are gracious, You are the cause of release on earth. All the branches of knowledge are Your divisions, Goddess, and so are all women in all the worlds. By You alone, Mother, all this is filled. What praise can reach You, who are beyond what praise can name, the highest of all utterances?

The gods name the Goddess in three ways, then admit that words give out. Three key words. Adhara means support, the thing a house stands on. Maya is the power that makes the world appear and also makes us mistake it, so that we are bewildered. Bija is seed, the small thing a whole tree is folded into. First the gods say She holds the world up as earth and feeds it as water. Ground and rain are the two things every living creature leans on without thinking. Next they call Her Vaishnavi, the power of Vishnu, and the seed of the world. In the gods' telling, the world grows out of Her. Then they call Her supreme Maya and say the whole world is bewildered by Her. They add that when She is gracious She becomes the cause of release. The same power that binds is the one that frees, and the difference lies in whether She is pleased. Then they say every branch of knowledge is a part of Her, and so are all women in all the worlds. Learning and womanhood are named as Her presence, not as something apart from Her. She fills all this. This is taught here because the gods have just been rescued. They want to thank Her and find that no praise is large enough, since She is already everything they could praise. The hymn ends in that honest admission. The listener is shown a way to stand before what cannot be fully said: name what one can, then stop.

A woven cloth has flowers, a border and a plain ground, yet if you pull on it you find one thread running through all of it. Each pattern is that thread turned a different way. The gods say the same of the Goddess: earth, water, knowledge and the bewildering world are all one presence.
