Words Fail; She Is Intellect
Devi Mahatmya 11.6
Meaning · English
Since you are the Goddess who has become all beings, and you give both heaven and release, what praise of ours could be higher than you, who are already praised? Whatever words we find fall short. You who stand in the heart of every person as intellect, giver of heaven and of final freedom, Devi, Narayani, homage to you.
The gods have been praising the Goddess for several verses. Here they stop and admit a problem. Praise needs someone to praise and words to do it with, and she is both. In their telling, she has become all beings, so the one praising is already her. Any word they pick falls short of the one it is meant for. Three words carry the verse. Buddhi is intellect, from budh, to wake or know. It is the faculty that understands, decides and recognises. The gods say she stands in the heart of every person in that form. Svarga is heaven, the world of enjoyment earned by good action. Apavarga is release. It comes from a root meaning to turn away, to be let go. It is freedom from the cycle of return. The gods say she gives both, so what a person gains and what a person is freed from come from the same Mother. Why say this here? The gods are answering their own question: how do you honour what you are made of? The name Narayani and the closing homage are their answer. They bow without claiming the words were enough. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to notice what the gods notice: the mind that understands is where she is said to be seated.
Someone sits down to read a letter of thanks to the sun, and they read it by sunlight. The words only exist because of the light they are meant to describe. The gods are in that position: they praise her with the intellect that is her own presence in them.
