The Melted Mind
Ashtavakra Gita 17.20
Meaning · English
Free of mental brightness, bewilderment, dream and dullness, he has come into some state that has no name, and becomes one whose mind has melted away.
Three words carry this. Galita means melted or dissolved, from gal, to dissolve or drip away. Manasa means belonging to the mind. A galitamanasa is one whose mind has melted, as ice does in warm water. Jadya means dullness, the heaviness of the inert, from jada, a thing without awareness. Dasha means state or condition, and kamapi means 'some', so the text calls it 'some state' because it cannot be pinned down. The verse names four things this person is free of. Mental brightness is the mind's busy lighting-up of one thing after another. Bewilderment is confusion. Dream is the mind making its own scenes. Dullness is the blank heaviness of deep sleep. The state sits outside all four, so it is not sharp thinking, not confusion, not dreaming and not dozing. Ashtavakra says only that the person has reached a condition no word fits, and that the mind has melted into it. He says this after describing the free one who sorts nothing into good and bad and does nothing for himself. A reader might ask what is left inside such a person. The answer is that he is not a blank and not a sleeper. The text asks the listener to stop trying to picture the state, and to drop the idea that freedom is a better mood or a cleverer mind.
An ice cube sits on a warm plate. It slowly loses its edges and corners until it is only water, spread out and shapeless. Nothing has been destroyed. The hard, separate form has gone. In the same way, the mind's sharp outlines of thinking, confusion and dreaming soften into something that has no shape to describe.
1. Tonight, for five minutes before sleep, sit quietly and notice which of four things is going on: busy thinking, confusion, daydream-like drifting, or heavy drowsiness. 2. Name it silently, in one word, without trying to fix it. 3. Notice that the one who names it is not the thing named. 4. Do not look for any special state. Simply see how often you take one of the four to be your whole self.
A woman stands on a railway platform at night, and her train is two hours late. Her mind replays an argument, then plans tomorrow, then drifts into a half-dream, then goes heavy and foggy. She calls all of this 'my mind', as if it were one thing. The verse separates these out. Busy brightness, confusion, dream and dullness are four different conditions, and the text says the free one is outside all of them. Seen this way, the foggy heaviness of tiredness is not stillness. Ordinary experience agrees, since a worn-out mind is dull, not quiet. So the first step is to tell the four apart and see that none of them is the goal. The next step is to stop treating each as an emergency. She can let the replay run without joining it, and let the fog be fog without scolding herself for it. The text teaches that the freedom it describes lies past all four, and that the mind melts into it. The verse does not promise she will feel calm on that platform, and it does not make the train come sooner. It is also no substitute for rest or for a doctor when tiredness or low mood goes on for long.
