He has no imagining of settled mind or unsettled, of good or harm. His mind is empty; he does not know these things, and he rests as if in aloneness. Nothing is mine to him, nothing is made into an I, and he is certain that nothing is anything. Every hope inside him has melted away. Doing, he does not do.

Four words carry the verse. Samadhana is the settling of the mind, the effort to concentrate. Nirmama means without 'mine', and nirahankara means without the 'I-maker', the habit of building a self around what happens. Kaivalya means aloneness, the self standing by itself with nothing added. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the one who knows has stopped making pictures about his own mind. He no longer sorts it into 'steady' and 'scattered', or his days into 'good for me' and 'bad for me'. His mind is empty of that sorting, so he does not even know he has stopped, and he rests as if alone with the self. Nothing is claimed as his, and no 'I' is built from it. 'Nothing is anything' is the text's way of saying that no event can be grabbed as the thing that makes or breaks him. Hope is the last thread, and Ashtavakra says it has melted from inside, not been cut by force. So the hands work, but nobody is inside them waiting for a reward. That is what 'doing, he does not do' means. The teaching answers Janaka's question about what freedom looks like from outside: very ordinary, and without a grip.

A child on a swing, once the pushing stops, keeps swinging for a while, then slows without any effort. The swing is the body and its work, still moving. The pushing is hope and the sense of owning the result, and it has gone quiet.

1. Pick one routine task today, such as washing dishes or sweeping, and do it fully for ten minutes. 2. While you work, notice each time you rehearse praise, blame or a result. Just notice it; do not argue with it. 3. When you finish, do not check or judge the result. Move straight to the next thing. 4. In the evening, recall whether the work felt lighter when no reward was waiting.

A grandmother is cooking for forty guests the night before a wedding. Half her mind is on the work. The other half is on whether the family will praise the food, whether her sister-in-law will find fault, whether the salt is right. Her shoulders are tight and her hands are clumsy. The verse would change this in steps. First, the hands go on stirring, because the work is real and needs doing. Second, the pictures of praise and blame are seen as pictures, and nothing is claimed as hers. Third, the hope for a good result loosens its hold, and the pot is simply tended. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: hands that are not clenched around worry usually work more steadily. The verse does not promise the food will be liked, and it does not remove her tiredness or any real loss that comes. It speaks of a mind that no longer stakes itself on the outcome, which is the text's teaching and not a method for better cooking.
