Neither Pushing Nor Pulling

Ashtavakra Gita 17.16

No harming, no pity, no pride, no meekness, no wonder, no turmoil in the one whose wandering has worn thin. The one who hates the objects of the senses is not free, and neither is the one who hungers after them. His mind clings to nothing, always, and he takes in whatever comes, and whatever does not come.

Ashtavakra is still describing the free person for King Janaka, and here he lists what is missing. Harming, pity, pride, meekness, wonder and turmoil are all movements of a mind that has taken a side, so none of them is found in him. Three words carry the verse. Saṃsaraṇa is wandering, the restless going-around from want to want, and in him it has worn thin. Viṣaya is an object, whatever the senses range over: food, praise, a person, a place. Asaṃsakta is unclinging, a mind that does not stick to what it meets. The centre of the teaching is the line about hating and craving. Hatred of objects is not freedom, because hatred still ties the mind to the thing it pushes away. Craving ties it just as firmly. The free one does neither. The last clause says he enjoys prāptāprāpta, what has come and what has not come. Presence and absence both reach him, and he is the same toward each. Janaka had asked how freedom is won, and Ashtavakra answers that it is not won by renouncing the world. It shows in a mind that no longer pulls or pushes.

A doorway stands open in a busy house. Guests pass through and the door neither slams on them nor holds them back, and when the room is empty it stays as it was. The mind of the free one is that doorway: things arrive and leave, and it neither bars the way nor clutches.

1. Pick one thing you usually reach for, such as tea, your phone or a sweet, and one thing you usually avoid, such as a noisy room or a dull chore. 2. Today, when each comes up, stop for three breaths before you act. 3. Notice the pull or the push as a plain sensation, where it sits and how strong it is. 4. Then do what the day needs, and watch whether the pull or push has already changed.

A retired schoolteacher stands outside a sweet shop on the first morning of a diet his doctor has insisted on. The smell reaches him, and two voices start up. One says just one piece. The other says it is poison and he must not even look. Both are loud, and both keep the sweet at the centre of his morning. Ordinary experience confirms that a food fought against often grows louder than a food simply left alone. The verse would change the moment in steps. He notices the pull and the push as two separate movements. He sees that neither one is an order. He walks on, and the sweet is neither a prize he missed nor an enemy he beat. The text teaches that this evenness, toward what comes and what does not, marks the free person. It does not promise that the craving vanishes today, or that illness is lightened. His doctor's advice stays exactly as it was, and the verse is no replacement for it.
