Meaning · English
When a woman comes to him full of love, or when death stands near, the great-minded one keeps a mind that does not shake. He rests in himself, and he is free indeed. In pleasure and in pain, in man and in woman, in riches and in ruin, the steady one sees no difference. He looks on everything with the same eye.
Four words carry the verse. Mahashaya is the great-minded one: ashaya is the place where the mind rests, and his rests wide. Svastha means standing in oneself, from sva, own self, and stha, to stand. Dhira is the steady one, who holds firm when others are pulled about. Samadarshin means same-seeing: sama is level, and darshana is sight. The first half gives two tests at opposite ends. Someone full of desire comes close, which is the strongest pull toward. Death arrives, which is the strongest push away. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the free man stays undisturbed in both and keeps his footing in himself. The second half widens the list: pleasure and pain, man and woman, gain and loss. For the steady one there is no visible difference in how he stands. It is taught here because Janaka has asked what marks the free. The text's answer is that the self is the witness, and a witness is not moved by what passes before it. So freedom shows as an even mind, not as a special act. The text asks for this evenness, which is not coldness. The same sight rests on all of it.
A tall mirror hangs in a hallway. A bride walks past it in her red sari, and an hour later a coffin is carried by. The glass shows each one clearly and keeps neither. In the verse, the knower is that glass: every scene appears in him, and none leaves a mark.
1. Today, catch one pull toward something, such as a sweet, a message, or a flattering remark. Notice how it feels in the body for the length of three slow breaths. 2. Catch one push away, such as an irritation or a bad piece of news. Give it the same three breaths. 3. Ask quietly: what in me is watching both? Stay with that question for half a minute, then carry on with your day.
A young man is dancing at his cousin's wedding. Someone he has been drawn to all evening has just smiled at him. His phone buzzes: his grandfather has collapsed at home. His heart is racing for two reasons at once, and for a moment he cannot tell which one is in charge. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, the pull and the shock are both seen as passing weather, neither one a command. Second, because neither has taken over, the mind stays wide enough to ask the plain question: what needs doing now? Third, he can walk out, call a relative and find a ride, with the same steady hands he had on the dance floor. The text holds that the one who sees alike in pleasure and in pain is not made smaller by either. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: tiredness and hurry make a mind lurch from one pull to the next. The verse does not promise that his grandfather will recover, or that grief will not come later. It does not replace a doctor, and it asks for no pretence that the moment does not matter.
