Meaning · English
The teachers sing the means to that devotion. It comes by giving up the pull of sense objects, and by giving up clinging to company. And it comes by worship that is not broken off, kept up without a gap.
Narada has said what bhakti, loving devotion, is. Now he says how it grows. He gives the teachers' answer, and it has three parts. The first is visaya-tyaga. Visaya means the things the senses reach out to: tastes, sights, sounds, comforts. Tyaga is giving up, letting go. The text speaks of the pull of these things, the way they take the mind and hold it. It does not call them evil. The second is sanga-tyaga. Sanga is clinging, keeping close, and also the company one keeps. The text names giving up that clinging as a means. What the mind is stuck to, it cannot easily turn from. The third is avyavrtta-bhajana. Bhajana is worship, from bhaj, to share in. Avyavrtta means not turned away, not interrupted. So the worship is unbroken, kept up without gaps. Why teach this here? Earlier sutras asked whether knowledge is the way, and said that seekers of freedom should take up devotion. The natural next question is how a person actually does it. Narada answers with two lettings-go and one holding-on. The mind has only so much room. Loosening what crowds it and steadily turning it toward God are the same work seen from two sides. The sutra asks the listener to look at what holds the mind, and at how often worship is dropped and picked up again.
A kettle on a stove. If the flame is switched off every few minutes, the water warms and cools and never boils. Left on steady heat, it comes to the boil. Worship kept without gaps is the steady flame, and the objects and attachments are the hand that keeps reaching to switch it off.
1. Tonight, pick one ten-minute stretch and put your phone in another room for it. 2. In that time, sit or do a quiet chore, and repeat one name of God slowly, aloud or silently. 3. When your mind slips off to something, note what it slipped to, without scolding yourself, and return to the name. 4. Tomorrow, try the same stretch at the same hour.
A woman sits on the train home after a long shift. Her prayer beads are in her bag. She means to use the twenty minutes, but her thumb has already opened a shopping app, and then a video, and the stop arrives with nothing done. The sutra's three parts fit that moment. First, she notices what the thumb reached for, and that it was offered again and again. Second, she puts the phone face down in her pocket for this one ride, loosening the grip a little. Third, she takes out the beads and says one name per bead, and when her mind wanders she comes back to the next bead. Twenty small returns are the unbroken worship the sutra asks for, kept up through the wandering itself. Ordinary experience agrees that attention follows what is repeatedly put in front of it. The sutra makes no promise about how she will feel when the ride ends, and it does not make her tiredness or worries go away.
