Grace Through Great Souls
Narada Bhakti Sutras 37
Meaning · English
Even in the world, devotion comes through hearing and singing the glories of God. But chiefly it comes through the grace of great souls, or through even a small trace of God's own grace.
Three words carry the sutra. Shravana is hearing, from shru, to listen. Kirtana is singing or telling aloud, from kirt, to speak of and praise. Kripa is grace, a kindness given freely and not earned. The first clause says that ordinary people living ordinary lives can begin by hearing and singing the glories of God. Narada does not ask anyone to leave the world first. The second clause names what matters most: the grace of mahat, the great ones, those whose lives are already full of devotion. The last clause adds that a tiny share of God's own grace can do the same work. Why teach this here? Sutra 34 listed the means, giving up sense attachment and steady worship. A reader could take that as a task done by effort alone. This sutra answers the quiet question: where does the spark come from? Narada says effort, hearing and singing, prepares the ground, but grace is what lights it. Sutra 39 says the company of the great is hard to find, and that it is gained only through their grace. So the listener is asked to keep hearing and singing, and to hold that effort lightly, open to a kindness that arrives from outside.
A farmer ploughs and sows, and that is hearing and singing. Still, the field waits for rain. A good farmer works the soil and keeps looking at the sky. Devotion is that field, and grace is the rain that no ploughing can make.
1. Choose one fixed time today, such as the evening meal or the walk home, and spend ten minutes hearing or softly singing a song or story about God's goodness. 2. Notice what shifts in your mood while it plays, and what remains after it ends. 3. Think of one person you know whose kindness or steadiness you trust. Spend a few minutes with them this week, and simply listen.
A young mother sits on the edge of the bed at 3 a.m., the baby finally asleep, her own mind racing with worry. She has tried willing herself calm and it has not worked. The verse speaks to that moment. It says effort has a place: she can play a quiet hymn or recall a story she loves, and let the words fill the room. Then it says the deeper change usually comes through someone else, a person whose steadiness settles you. So she might phone her own mother or an old friend and just listen to a calm voice. Ordinary experience confirms that a settled person can settle us, and that familiar songs ease a crowded mind. The verse does not promise the worry will vanish, nor that grace arrives on any schedule. It is no substitute for a doctor when exhaustion or low mood has become heavy and lasting.
