A Rare, Unfailing Company
Narada Bhakti Sutras 39
Meaning · English
The company of the great is hard to find. It lies beyond ordinary reach, yet it is never empty or wasted. It is gained only by his grace, and by that grace it is truly gained.
Three words describe the company of the great. Durlabha means hard to obtain: such people are few, and meeting them is rare. Agamya means not reachable by going. No road, plan or amount of effort carries a person to them. Amogha means not empty. Time spent in that company is never wasted, and something always takes root. Then the sutra turns on one word, kripa, grace, which is kindness given freely, not wages paid. The company of the great is gained through his grace alone. The same sutra calls it hard, unreachable and unfailing, and says it can still be gained. Sutra 37 has just said the grace of the great is the chief way, and this sutra says what stands behind that: such a meeting is a gift. Narada teaches this so that no seeker thinks sainthood can be bought by effort, and so that no one who has not yet met a saint gives up. The sutra asks the listener for humility and readiness. A person can prepare and ask. Narada does not say the meeting can be forced. When it comes, it is to be treated as a gift received, not a prize won.
A small bird lands on a windowsill. Chasing it only sends it off, but a person who sits still and leaves the window open may find it there one morning. The company of the great is like that bird. It cannot be hunted down, and when it comes it is a gift.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one person whose company has left you steadier or kinder. Think about how you met them. 2. Send them a short note of thanks, or say it aloud if they are near. 3. This week, if you are offered an hour with an elder, a teacher or a good talk, accept without bargaining. 4. An hour afterward, notice what stayed with you.
A young man has moved to a new city for work. For weeks he has eaten dinner alone and answered no one's messages. One evening an elderly neighbour on the stairs asks how he is, and waits for the answer. He had not gone looking for this. He stays ten minutes and climbs the last flight lighter than before. The verse reads this moment gently. First, it names the meeting as a gift: he did not engineer it, and the verse does not call him lazy for not finding it sooner. Second, it calls such company unfailing, so even ten minutes counts. Third, the text's own teaching is that grace is behind such meetings, and its reader is asked to receive them with thanks and not with grabbing. Ordinary experience agrees that we take on the manner of the people we spend time with, so who we sit beside matters. The verse does not promise that a good teacher will appear on schedule, and it does not replace friends, family or a doctor for someone who is struggling.
