Meaning · English
In God and in His devotee there is no difference. So let that very thing be pursued. Let that very thing be pursued.
Two Sanskrit words carry this. Bhakta is the devotee, one who shares in God through love, from the root bhaj, to share. Bheda is difference, a split or dividing line, and abhava means its absence. Narada says that between God and His devotee there is no such line. The sutra does not say the devotee becomes the whole of God. It says nothing stands between them. Then comes the instruction, said twice: sadhyatam, let it be pursued, let it be worked at. The repetition marks the end of a thought, and it presses the point. Why is this taught here? The sutras around it have spoken of hearing and singing about God, and of the company of great souls whose grace is rare. A reader may ask why that company matters so much. Narada's answer is that those who love God are not apart from Him, so keeping their company is already a nearness to Him. Sutra 43 then warns against bad company, and sutra 46 asks who crosses beyond illusion. The answer there is the one who leaves attachment and serves the great. What the sutra asks of the listener is to make this closeness the aim, and to hold it above lesser aims.
A lamp lit from another lamp. The flame on the second wick is not a copy kept at a distance; it is the same fire, burning in a new place. Narada says the devotee stands to God as that second flame stands to the first: nothing divides them.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and think of one person whose love for God you trust, someone you have met or heard of. 2. Notice how you treat them in your mind: with respect, or with distance. Let any wish to be near them stand without argument. 3. This week, spend one hour in their company, in person or by a call, and speak of what you both hold dear. 4. Before sleep, say the line twice, quietly: let that very thing be pursued.
A grandmother sits at a hospital bedside through the night, hand on her grandson's blanket. A neighbour who prays daily comes by with tea and sits down beside her without saying much. By morning the grandmother feels less alone, and she cannot quite say why. The sutra speaks to this moment. Narada teaches that one who loves God is not set apart from God, so sitting beside such a person is a kind of drawing near to what she is reaching for. Step by step: she notices who has come, she receives them without hurrying them away, and she lets the quiet between them be the thing she came for. Ordinary experience confirms that a steady, kind presence settles a frightened mind. The sutra goes further, and that further claim is the text's own teaching about God and devotee, offered as such. It does not promise the boy will recover, nor that her fear will vanish. It is no substitute for the doctors treating him. It names where she may turn her attention while she waits.
