Bad company is to be given up in every way, completely. It is the cause of desire and anger, of confusion, of the loss of memory, of the ruin of understanding, and in the end of the ruin of everything. These influences seem like ripples at first. But through company they swell into oceans.

Narada's key word here is duhsanga, bad company. Sanga means clinging together, keeping close, being joined to something. Duh means bad or hard. So the word covers any association that pulls the mind the wrong way, whether a person, a conversation or a habit of attention. The second word is sarvatha, in every way. Narada asks for no half measures and no loopholes. Then he gives the chain. Bad company causes kama, craving, and krodha, anger, which is craving blocked. From these come moha, bewilderment, and then the loss of smriti, memory, meaning that a person forgets what he cared about and what he set out to do. When memory goes, buddhi, the power of judging, is ruined. When judgment is ruined, everything is lost. Then comes the picture of small waves. Each of these, craving, anger and the rest, looks harmless as a ripple. Company gives it room and it grows into an ocean. This is taught here because the sutras just before it speak of how rare and precious the company of the great is. Narada now turns to the other side of the same truth. If company can lift a person, company can also sink him. He gives the reason plainly: the danger is slow, so it goes unnoticed. He asks the listener to take the small beginnings seriously and to guard them early, while they are still ripples.

A pinch of damp on a kitchen wall looks like nothing. Left alone through one monsoon, it spreads across the whole ceiling and rots the plaster. Craving and irritation picked up from the people around us start the same way, small and easy to ignore, and company is the weather that spreads them.

1. Tonight, recall the last conversation that left you restless, envious or irritated, with no clear reason why. 2. Name the first small ripple you felt in it: a want, a sting, a complaint. Notice how quickly it grew. 3. This week, when that kind of talk starts, step away, change the subject or end the call a little sooner than usual. 4. Afterwards, sit for two minutes and notice how your mind feels.

A man is at a family wedding, and a cousin starts listing what other relatives have bought, built and earned. He feels fine at first. Twenty minutes later he is thinking about his own small flat, and he snaps at his wife over nothing. Narada's chain fits this: a ripple of wanting, then irritation, then a clouded mind that has forgotten why he came. Seen this way, the verse asks for a different move. He can catch the first ripple, which is easier than the last one. He can steer the talk elsewhere, or walk outside for a few minutes, before the mood takes over the evening. Ordinary experience confirms that moods spread between people sitting close together, and that an angry mind judges badly. The verse does not promise that he will never feel envy, or that every hard relative can be avoided. It does not replace care for someone whose low mood or anger has become heavy and lasting, where a doctor or counsellor is the right person to ask.
