Crossing by Serving Greatness

Meaning · English
Who crosses, who crosses maya? The one who gives up clinging, who serves those of great spirit, and who becomes free of the sense of "mine."
The sutra begins with a question and answers it in three steps. Maya is the pull of the world: the web of wanting and forgetting that makes passing things look like everything. Narada asks who gets across it, and he repeats the question to show it matters. The first step is to give up sanga. The word means clinging, from a root that means to stick, and it is the grip of the mind on people, things and results. The second step is to serve the mahanubhava, the great one. Maha means great, and anubhava means lived experience. So this is a person whose greatness comes from what they have actually lived, not from rank or noise. Serving such a person is practical and humble. It means helping, listening and staying near. The third step is nirmama, which means without "mine." Mama is "mine," and nirmama is the state where "my" stops running every thought. Narada gives this answer right after warning against bad company in sutra 43. Having said what drags a person down, he now says what carries one over. Clinging is let go, not by force alone, but by staying near someone who has already let go. The sutra asks that the three come together: loosen the grip, serve the great, and let "mine" fade.
A hiker stands at a stream, clutching a heavy bag to her chest, afraid to wet it. A local man steps across the stones with empty hands and waits. She sets the bag on her back, follows his steps, and gets over. The bag is clinging, the guide is the great one, and the stones are the way across.
1. Tonight, name one thing you grip hard, such as a result, an opinion or an object. Write it on paper and look at it for two minutes. 2. This week, find one steady, kind person you know, and spend ten minutes helping them with a plain task, like carrying bags or washing cups. 3. While you help, notice how often they say "mine" and how often you do. 4. Before sleep, loosen your grip on the one thing you named by one small act, such as lending it or letting someone else decide.
A grandfather hands his daughter the keys to the shop he has run for forty years. It is her first morning in charge. He stands by the counter, itching to correct the way she arranges the shelves. Everything in him says the shop is his. The verse, as Narada teaches it, offers three moves. First, he notices the grip and names it as clinging. Second, he remembers a neighbour who handed over his own business with calm and cheer, and he goes to sit with that neighbour for an hour, helping with a small chore. Third, he tries saying "our shop" instead of "my shop" and goes for a walk. Ordinary experience confirms that time near a steady person tends to rub off a little steadiness. The verse does not promise the ache of letting go will vanish, nor that his daughter will run the shop as he would. It also does not replace the grief of a life's work changing hands, or a doctor's help if that grief turns heavy.
