Meaning · English

Whoever lives in a quiet, secluded place, who pulls up the bonds of the world by the root, becomes free of the three gunas. Whoever gives up concern for gaining and keeping, whoever gives up the fruit of action, and lays down even the actions themselves, goes beyond the pairs of opposites.

Narada strings together a chain of letting go. Four terms carry it. Viviktasthana is a secluded place, a spot set apart where the world's noise falls away. Lokabandha is the bond to the world: the ties of expectation, reputation and belonging. Nistraigunya means being beyond the three gunas, the three strands of nature that the sutras treat as what pulls the mind about. Yogakshema is gaining what one lacks and guarding what one has, the constant worry of a householder. Karmaphala is the fruit of action, the payment one hopes for from every deed. Clause by clause: the one who sits in quiet and uproots the world's ties is no longer ruled by those three strands. The one who drops anxious gaining and keeping, drops the hope of reward, and sets down the busy deeds themselves, becomes nirdvandva, free of the pairs: pleasure and pain, gain and loss, praise and blame. Narada teaches this because the question running through these sutras is how the mind crosses what holds it. His answer is that the pairs only grip a mind that is waiting on results. Take away the waiting and they lose their hold. The sutras around it ask the listener to loosen the grip step by step, not to despise the world.

A man carries a heavy bag on a long walk and holds it so tightly his hands cramp, checking it at every turn. He sets it down on a bench and his shoulders drop. The bag is the hope of reward and the fear of loss; setting it down is the giving up the sutra describes.

1. Choose one task today that you usually do while hoping for thanks, a good result or a reply. 2. Before starting, say quietly, 'I do this for its own sake.' 3. Do it fully, then do not check for the outcome for one hour. 4. Notice how often your mind reaches for the reward, and let it go each time.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor while her son is in a long exam for a job he badly wants. She keeps running the outcomes: if he passes, if he fails, what the neighbours will say. Her stomach is tight and she cannot sit still. The sutra would change the moment in small steps. She would stop rehearsing results she cannot reach. She would find a quiet corner, if only a bench by a window. She would turn from the ties of status and expectation to what is in her hands: a glass of water, a kind word when he comes out, a meal ready afterwards. Ordinary experience agrees that worry about outcomes often adds strain without changing anything. The sutra describes a much fuller letting go than this, one that ends in freedom from the pairs of opposites, and that is the text's own teaching. It does not promise that she will feel no fear, that he will pass, or that anxiety needing care from a doctor will simply fade.
