Love Without a Break

Meaning · English
The one who lets go even of the Vedas, and gains only love that is never broken, crosses over. That one crosses over, and carries others across the world as well.
Narada's sutra has two halves. The first names what is given up and what is gained. The Vedas are the sacred texts, and sannyasa, the word for giving up, means to set down fully. Narada does not say the Vedas are worthless. He says the one who has found love no longer needs to lean on them. What is gained is anuraga, a love that clings to God the way a heart clings to what it cannot do without. It is avicchinna, unbroken, like oil poured in one unbroken stream. The second half says what follows. The one who has this love tarati, crosses, the way a person crosses a river. Narada repeats the word, so the crossing is certain in his telling. Then comes a further thing: such a person tarayati, causes others to cross. The sutra is placed here because the earlier ones asked how anyone gets across the pull of the world. Narada's answer is that the means finally fall away and only the love is left. He asks the listener to hold love steady, not in bursts. A person who is crossed over becomes a boat for others.
A child learns to ride a bicycle with a hand on the seat. For weeks that hand matters. Then the rider pedals away without noticing it has gone, and later carries a smaller child on the back. The steadying hand is the learning, the riding is the unbroken love, and the passenger is the others carried.
1. Choose one ordinary daily act you already do, such as washing the dishes or walking to the bus. 2. For one week, during that act, quietly keep God's name or thought with you, even for a few seconds. 3. When it slips, return without scolding yourself. Notice how many times it was unbroken that day. 4. Once this week, do something kind for one other person while holding that thought.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his father is in surgery. He has prayed in bursts all day, and now his mind keeps jumping between fear and the vending machine. The sutra speaks to that moment. Narada's point is that continuity matters more than intensity. So the man stops trying to recite everything he knows and keeps one steady thing, a single name or a few quiet words, returning to it each time fear pulls him off. His breathing slows a little, and a nurse who passes sees someone calm enough to ask a question. Later, he is the one who sits beside his frightened sister. Ordinary experience confirms that a steady, simple habit is easier to hold in a crisis than a long and complicated one, and that calm in one person tends to settle another. The sutra does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take the place of the surgeon or the doctor's advice. It speaks of what the heart holds while the outcome is unknown.
