Deluded by the Three Modes

Bhagavad Gita 7.13

Meaning · English

Bewildered by these three states, made of the modes of nature, the whole world fails to know me, who am beyond them and imperishable.

Krishna tells Arjuna that the whole world is bewildered, and he names the cause. Three kinds of inner state, each made of the gunas, hold everyone's attention. Guna means a strand, as in a strand of rope. Nature is twisted from three of them, and every mood a person has is some mixture of the three. Mohita means deluded or bewildered. It is the confusion of someone so absorbed in what is passing that he cannot see what is not. Avyaya means imperishable, literally without spending or wearing away. The states rise and fade, and Krishna describes himself as what does not. Param means beyond, higher than the states. So the plain sense is this. People meet life through the three states and take them to be everything. Because of that, they do not know him, who stands above them and does not decay. The problem is not that he is hidden far away. The problem is that the mind is full of its own weather. Shankara reads the verse as saying that people miss the Self behind all change. Ramanuja reads it as saying that people bound to these states miss God, who is other than them and supreme. Madhva stresses that God is distinct from the world and above its qualities.

A man sits in a cinema, so caught up in the scenes that he forgets he is watching light on a screen. The film changes colour, and his feelings change with it. The beam behind him stays steady the whole time. The scenes are the three states, the audience is the world, and the steady beam is what Krishna says is beyond them.

1. Choose three fixed times today, such as after waking, mid-afternoon and before bed. 2. At each, stop for one minute and name your state in plain words: settled and clear, driven and wanting, or heavy and dull. 3. Notice that you were present before the mood arrived, and that you will be present after it passes. 4. Do not try to change the mood. Just write the three words on paper and look at them in the evening.

A young father paces the kitchen at two in the morning with a crying baby. He is furious at his wife for sleeping and certain the whole house is against him. By noon he will feel tender toward all three of them. Krishna's teaching, as told to Arjuna, reads that midnight anger as a state of the gunas and not a verdict on the world. In the moment, the father could say quietly to himself, this is a driven state, and it has come over me. That small naming gives him a little room. He still walks the baby, but he does not issue judgments about his marriage at that hour. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness darkens everything it looks at. The verse does not promise that the anger will vanish, that the baby will sleep, or that real problems in a household are only moods. If exhaustion or low mood lasts for weeks, that is a matter for a doctor and not for a verse.
