Crossing by Surrender
Bhagavad Gita 7.14
Meaning · English
This divine energy of mine, made of the three modes of nature, is very hard to overcome. But those who surrender to me alone cross over this Maya.
Three words carry the verse. Maya is God's energy that veils his true nature from souls not yet ready to realise him; its root sense is something that measures out and covers, like a screen. Guna-mayi means made of the gunas, the three strands of goodness, passion and ignorance. Duratyaya joins dur, hard, with atyaya, passing beyond: very hard to get past. Prapadyante comes from a root meaning to step toward and fall at someone's feet. It is surrender. Krishna tells Arjuna that the veil belongs to him, that it is divine, and that it is woven from the same strands that make every mood and every object. Cleverness and effort alone do not get past it. He says this because he has just said the whole world is deluded and does not know him. The next question is how anyone gets out, and he answers it: those who come to him alone cross over. Shankara reads maya as the power of the Lord himself, crossed by taking refuge in him as one's own Self. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's nature, crossed by devoted surrender to him. Madhva stresses that the crossing happens through the Lord's grace.
A swimmer is caught in a strong river current at dusk. Her own strokes only tire her. Then someone on the far bank throws a rope, and she takes hold. The current is the pull of nature's strands, and the rope is the one she turns to and holds.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one pull that steered you today: irritation, craving, worry. Just name it, without blaming yourself. 2. In your own words, address God as you understand him: "I cannot manage this alone. Please help." Hand that one matter over. 3. Tomorrow, when the same pull arrives, say the same sentence once, silently, before you act. Notice whether anything loosens, even slightly.
A father stands in the hallway after shouting at his son over spilled juice. He had promised himself last week that he would stop. Now he is tired, hungry and ashamed, and his first impulse is to explain it away. The verse turns the moment in steps. First, it lets him see that the pull was real and stronger than a resolution made on a calm evening. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness and hunger weaken restraint. Second, it gives him somewhere to turn besides his own willpower: Krishna says those who surrender to him alone cross over. So he stands quietly, asks for help in his own words, and then goes in and apologises to the boy. The verse does not promise that the temper will be gone by morning, or that the crossing is quick. It also does not replace getting help from a doctor or counsellor if anger keeps slipping out of his control.
