Why Some Turn Away

Bhagavad Gita 7.15

Meaning · English

The evil-doers, the ignorant, the lowest of people, do not surrender to me. Their intellect has been carried off by my material energy, and they take refuge in a demoniac nature.

Krishna has just said that those who surrender to him cross over his maya. Now he names who does not. Three words matter. Mudha means a person dazed or stupefied, not stupid. Prapadyante means to throw oneself at the feet of something, to take refuge. Asura bhava is a demoniac cast of mind, a settled way of being. Krishna lists four kinds of people who do not turn to him: those who do wrong, those who are dazed, those who follow their lower nature out of laziness, and those whose knowledge has been stolen by maya. The last clause carries the reason. Their discernment is gone, so they take shelter in a nature that serves appetite and ego, and they do not see anything beyond it. Krishna describes a pattern in which wrong action, clouded judgment and a hardened temperament feed one another. It asks the listener to notice which way the mind leans when it chooses a refuge. Shankara reads the four as the kinds of people who never seek the Lord. Ramanuja reads them as four distinct failings, each blocking surrender in its own way. Madhva takes the demoniac nature as a real and lasting disposition in some souls.

A man pulls the curtains shut every morning, then complains that the room is dark. After a while he stops noticing the window at all and calls the dim room home. The curtains are the clouded intellect, and the sunlight is what Krishna says they never turn toward.

1. Tonight, recall one small thing you did today that you hoped nobody would notice. 2. Write down in one line the excuse your mind gave you at the time. 3. Read the line slowly and ask whether you would say it aloud to someone you respect. 4. Tomorrow, when the same kind of moment comes, pause for three breaths before you act, and notice which way you lean.

A shopkeeper is mixing a cheaper oil into the good tins before opening. Nobody checks, and his rent is due. He tells himself that everyone does it. The verse speaks to this moment as Krishna's account of how the mind goes dark: wrong action first, then the excuses, then a settled habit, until the clear sight that could have stopped him is gone. In that moment the verse would ask him to see the excuse as the thing that dims his judgment. Naming it, and pausing before he pours, gives his discernment a chance to speak. Ordinary experience bears this out: a small wrong repeated becomes easier each time, and the reasons for it come quicker. The verse does not promise that doing right will clear his debts or ease the rent. It also does not say a person is lost for good. It describes why the mind stops looking for refuge, and it leaves the choosing to him.
