Guidance Beyond Ignorance
Prashna Upanishad 6.8
Meaning · English
They honored him, saying, you indeed are our father, you who carry us across our ignorance to the other shore. Salutation to the supreme seers! Salutation to the supreme seers!
The students acknowledge their teacher as a parental figure. They use the word father to describe someone who provides essential care and direction. Their goal is to move past ignorance, which is the state of not knowing the true nature of reality. The teacher carries them across, from a place of confusion to a state of clarity that exists beyond ordinary understanding.
A mountain guide leading hikers through a thick fog. The hikers cannot see the trail or the summit, but they trust the guide's map and experience to get them to the clear air of the peak. The guide represents the teacher, and the fog represents the ignorance being left behind.
