Meaning · English
Savarni, the son of the Sun, who is called the eighth Manu: listen as I tell at length how he came to be. By the power of the Great Illusion, Mahamaya, that greatly fortunate son of Ravi, the Sun, became the lord of a Manu's age.
Markandeya opens with a name and a promise. The name is Savarni, the eighth Manu, a son of the Sun. The promise is to tell, at length, how he came to be. Three words carry the opening. Manu is the figure who stands at the head of a long span of time. Manvantara means the interval of a Manu, from manu, the first ruler, and antara, interval. The lord of a manvantara is the one who holds that span. Savarni is destined for it, and Markandeya says he is the eighth. Mahamaya is the Great Illusion, the Goddess in her power to make and to bind. Maya comes from a root meaning to measure out, to fashion. Anubhava, the word for her working here, means felt power, a greatness that is experienced as well as claimed. The clauses run in order. First comes the name and rank of Savarni. Then the invitation: Markandeya asks his listener to hear closely and promises detail, not a summary. Then the claim that carries the whole opening. Savarni became lord of an age by the power of Mahamaya. The text puts her at the root of his birth before any story begins. That is why it is taught first. The tale is about a Manu, and Markandeya says the cause behind that Manu is the Goddess. The listener is asked to listen with that in mind.
A bridge often has a plaque at its entrance naming who built it. Before anyone crosses, they know whose work they are walking on. Markandeya's opening line is that plaque. It names Mahamaya as the power behind Savarni's birth before the story begins.
