Meaning · English

In the age of the Manu Svarocisa, long ago, there was a king named Suratha, born in the line of Chaitra, who ruled the whole circle of the earth. He protected his people well, as though they were his own sons born of his body. Then enemies rose against him, kings who were destroyers of the Kola people. He was mighty in the use of the rod of punishment, yet war was fought between him and them. Though those enemies were fewer in number, the Kola destroyers defeated him in battle.

Three words carry the verse. Manvantara, here the age of a Manu, is the stretch of time in which one Manu rules, so the story is set far back. Danda is the rod, the king's power to punish and keep order; Suratha is called mighty in it. Samyak palana means guarding rightly, with nothing held back. The text says he cared for his subjects the way a father cares for sons of his own body. Now the clauses in order. Suratha is named and placed: an old age, a famous line, rule over the whole earth. He is a good king, and the text says so first. Then enemies appear, kings who destroy the Kolas. A war follows. The last line is the hard one. His foes were fewer, and he still lost. Markandeya tells it this way to set up a question. A man who did everything right, with strength on his side and numbers too, still falls. The story does not explain the loss by any fault in him. It leaves the reader with the puzzle, and the sage Medhas will answer it later by pointing to Mahamaya, the Goddess's power that binds even the wise. What it asks of the listener is only to hold the facts as given: goodness, strength and an unjust defeat, all at once. The teaching begins from there, with a king who has lost what he deserved to keep.

A farmer tends his field for years, mends the fence, waters every row, and still one hailstorm flattens the crop in an afternoon. His care was real and his work was sound. The storm belongs to a larger order than his effort, as Suratha's defeat does, despite his justice and his strength.
