Meaning · English
Among these four, the one who knows, ever steady, devoted to the One alone, stands highest. To that knower I am exceedingly dear, and that knower is dear to me.
Krishna has just named four kinds of people who turn to him. Now he picks out the fourth. Three words carry it. Jnani comes from jnana, knowing: someone who sees what Krishna truly is, not someone who has merely collected facts. Nitya-yukta joins nitya, always, with yukta, yoked or joined: a person whose attention stays harnessed to him through good days and bad. Eka-bhakti joins eka, one, with bhakti, devotion: love with a single object, not split among many hopes. Krishna says this person is highest among the four. The reason he gives is closeness. The knower sees him as he is, loves him for nothing else, and so is exceedingly dear to him. Then the bond runs back: the knower is dear to Krishna as well. The other three come with a need, whether pain, curiosity or wealth. The knower comes with none, and the steadiness follows from that. Nothing is held back as a bargaining chip, so no outcome can shake the devotion. The classical teachers read the word knower in their own ways. Shankara takes it as one who knows the Lord as his own Self. Ramanuja takes it as a devotee whose knowledge and love are one, so that he cannot bear to live apart from the Lord. Madhva stresses knowledge of the Lord's greatness joined to devotion.
Picture two kinds of visitor at an old friend's house. One arrives only when something is needed: a loan, advice, a favour. The other turns up on ordinary afternoons, asks for nothing and sits down for tea. The host's heart opens fastest to the second. That visitor is the knower, and the bond is the mutual dearness.
1. Tonight, take five quiet minutes and recall the last time you turned to God, or to whatever you hold most sacred. Notice whether you were asking for something. 2. Spend one of those minutes with no request at all. Offer thanks, or simply sit in attention. 3. Notice how the asking pulls back in, and how it feels when it is set down. 4. Repeat at the same hour for three evenings.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while his father is in surgery. He is bargaining hard with God, promising and pleading, and each time the door opens his chest tightens. Krishna names this kind of turning, the distressed one, among the four, and does not scorn it. What the verse adds is a different footing: a person who knows whom he is turning to, and whose devotion does not depend on the outcome. In that corridor, the first step would be to notice that the bargaining is fear speaking. The second would be to let the pleading quieten into simple presence, a steadiness that asks nothing in return. The third would be to carry the same attention out of the corridor, whatever the doctor says. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a bond that only appears when something is wanted feels thin to both sides. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not remove fear or grief. It is no substitute for the surgeon, the nurse or a friend sitting beside him.
