The Knower Is Myself

Bhagavad Gita 7.18

Meaning · English

All of these are noble, indeed. But the one established in knowledge I hold to be my very self. United in mind, he stands firm in me, the highest goal.

Three words carry the verse. Udara means noble, generous, large-hearted. Jnani is one who knows, from jnana, knowledge. Yukta-atma is one whose self is yoked, joined, held steady. Krishna has just named four kinds of people who turn to him: the distressed, the curious, the seekers of gain, and the knower. Now he says all four are noble. Nobody who turns to him is dismissed. Then he singles out the knower: that one is my very self, he says. The knower does not come to him for relief, answers or reward. His mind is joined to Krishna, and Krishna himself is the goal he stands on, the highest one, with nothing beyond it to reach for. The reason is in the verses around it. The others come for something that Krishna gives, while the knower comes for Krishna. So the closeness is greatest there. It asks the listener to notice what they are really reaching for when they turn toward God. Shankara reads the knower as one with the Self, not different from Krishna. Ramanuja reads it as the knower being so dear and so dependent on Krishna that he cannot hold himself apart. Madhva reads it as the nearest and dearest of devotees, while keeping the soul and God distinct.

Picture four people visiting a well-loved old house. One comes to shelter from rain, one to ask directions, one to borrow tools. The fourth comes only to sit in the kitchen with the owner. All are welcome, but only the last is family. Krishna's four kinds of seekers are the visitors, and the knower is the one who is at home.

1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling the last time you prayed or turned inward. 2. Ask quietly what you were after: comfort, an answer, a result, or simply to be near. 3. Do not judge the answer. Just name it to yourself in one word. 4. Tomorrow, once, sit for one minute with no request at all, and notice how that feels compared to asking.

A mother has four grown children. Three ring her on a Sunday evening: one for money advice, one to complain about work, one to ask for a recipe. The fourth rings and says little, only stays on the line while both of them cook. She does not love the first three less. Their calls are real and she is glad of them. Still, she knows which call feels like being with her child. Krishna's teaching works in the same order. First he calls every turning toward him noble, so the mother need not feel ashamed of her own requests either. Then he points to a nearness that wants nothing and asks only to be joined. Step by step, a person can begin by seeing what each call or prayer is for, welcoming it, and leaving a little space with no request in it. Ordinary experience confirms that company without an agenda feels different from company with one. The verse does not promise that this nearness removes worry, loss or illness, and it does not replace a doctor, a lawyer or a plain conversation where one is needed.
