Ravana could not hide the fear in his eyes. Something was coming, and he knew it. He called his counsellors, then went silent and shut himself in his own chamber, thinking. At last he sent for the one he trusted most for this kind of work: Vidyujjihva, a magician whose whole skill lay in doing harm. "I want you to deceive Sita," the king said. "Use your art. Make me a head that looks exactly like Rama's. Make his long arrows too, and his great bow. We will put them in front of Janaka's daughter." Vidyujjihva bowed and set to work, and what he made was a marvel of its kind. Ravana was so pleased that he gave him a costly ornament as a reward.
Then the lord of Lanka walked to the grove where Sita was held. He found her lying on the bare ground, pale, thin and weeping, and even in that misery every thought she had was of her husband. Ravana came close and announced himself in a cheerful voice. Her distress meant nothing to him. "The prince you keep clinging to," he said, "the one who killed Khara, the one you preferred to the king of Lanka, is dead. My warriors killed him. Your root has been cut. Your pride is finished. Your husband fell in battle, and now you will be Ravana's bride. Let go of these useless thoughts. What will you do with a dead man, Sita? Get up and be the first of all my queens."
"Listen, and I will tell you how he died. He built a bridge across the sea and brought his army over to fight me. By sunset they reached the shore, and they were so worn out that they set no guard. They simply lay down on the sand and slept. Prahasta's troops fell on them in the dark. Their best fighters barely had time to stand. Axes, spears and swords came down on the sleeping thousands, and Prahasta himself, first into the fight, cut off your husband's head while he slept. Vibhishana woke to the noise and was taken prisoner. Lakshmana ran into the forest with what monkeys he had left. Hanuman fell. One blow broke King Sugriva's neck. Mainda went down, and Dvivida lay bleeding out his life."
"The vanaras died or scattered like small clouds when a storm breaks. Some flew up into the air, some ran to the sea. Our giants left the dead on the shore, in the woods, on the hills and plains. Look. Here is his head, filthy with dust and dripping blood." He turned to his servant. Vidyujjihva came forward carrying the head, still wet, along with the arrows and the great bow, and bent low before his master. "Put the head in front of her," Ravana said. "Let her see with her own weeping eyes that her husband is dead." The giant laid the beautiful false head before her. "You know this bow," Ravana went on. "Heaven and earth have heard of it. Prahasta brought it here after he killed your prince. You are a widow now. Give up your hopes. Forget him, and be mine."
Sita's eyes filled again. She looked at the head. She looked at the bow, the famous bow Rama had always carried. She looked at the cheek and the brows, the eyes of the man she loved, his lips, the shine of his hair, the jewel that glittered in it. She knew those features. Pain went through her, and she cried out, "Kaikeyi, are you happy now? You have everything you wanted. The joy of Raghu's line is dead, and the old family is ruined by your trick. What wrong had Rama ever done you, that you sent him into the wilderness in a hermit's clothes, with Sita beside him?" Then a great trembling took hold of her, and she went down like a plantain tree that has been cut, and lay as still as the dead.
Slowly her senses came back. She fixed her eyes on that dear head and wept bitterly. "When I see your cold face, my hero, I die too. A faithful wife only learns what sorrow is when her husband dies. You were so close, so close to saving me, and someone crept up and killed you. No. You are not dead. Get up. The wise said you would live long, and the wise do not lie. Do you love the cold lap of the earth more than mine? Is this how I see your bow again, the golden bow I used to hang with garlands I had made? Have you gone to heaven, to your ancestors and to Dasharatha? When we were young and you took my hand, you promised I would walk the path of duty beside you all my life. Keep that promise now. Take me with you."
"That chest I leaned on, that neck I held, are dogs and vultures tearing them now? Will no one give him funeral rites, the man who gave so generously and kept the sacred fires burning? Kaushalya will see only one of the three who went into exile come home. Lakshmana will tell her how they were killed at night, how the giants crept up on you asleep, and she will die of a broken heart. And all of it for me. Rama, who bridged the sea, killed in a puddle because of his worthless wife. Ravana, kill me too, on top of him. Let me lie beside him, cheek to cheek, and close my eyes and follow him." As she wept, a guard came and bowed to Ravana. Prahasta was at the gate with ministers and nobles, he said, on urgent business, asking to see the king.
Ravana, anxious, left at once to meet him. And the moment he left Sita, the head and the bow were gone. In his hall he looked over his nobles, as terrible as Yama, and said, "The time has come. Beat the drums and gather the army. The enemy is close to the city. Be careful, and do not tell anyone why." They obeyed, and soon the night-roaming hosts stood ready and eager for battle. But one of Sita's guards, a rakshasa woman named Sarama, had a gentler heart. She had grown to love the unhappy lady. She slipped to Sita's side and spoke softly. "I heard everything, hiding in the thicket. Then I followed Ravana and learned why he left. Do not weep, my queen. Rama was not killed in his sleep. He cannot be taken by day or surprised by night. He is not dead. A great magician, on his master's orders, made that thing you saw."
"Have hope. Fortune is smiling on you. Rama and his vanaras have bridged the sea and are standing on this shore. I have seen him with my own eyes. Spies are running to Ravana every moment, and every lord is called to council." Just then came the roar of armies gathering, drums and conches and battle cries. "Hear that," Sarama said. "Elephants and horses being led out, chariots readied, horsemen in armour with axes and spears, the evening sun on helmets and swords. The troops of Lanka are afraid. Rama will kill his enemy and free you. Soon your head will rest on his chest, and you will cry from joy." Sita was comforted the way dry earth is comforted by the first rain. Sarama offered to fly to Rama with a message. "No," said Sita softly. "Go and learn what Ravana is planning. He torments me with his tricks, and I am afraid of him even here."
Sarama went. She heard the king speak of his hopes and fears in the crowded council hall, and then, true to her word, she flew back to the Ashoka grove. Sita was waiting on the grass, and with a gentle smile led her to a seat, though a shiver ran through her as Sarama began. "His own mother was there. She begged him to set you free, and the elder nobles begged with her. Send the Maithil queen back with honour, they said. Remember Janasthana. Remember how Hanuman crossed the sea. Remember our chiefs who fell. It was useless. Like a miser with his gold, he will not let you go until he is dead. And Rama's arrows will kill him and all his giants, and take you home." At that moment a terrible sound rose from the approaching army, drums and conches together, and the earth shook. Inside the walls, Lanka's troops stood trembling, thought of the storm about to break, and cursed the king who would be their ruin.
