The Two Foundations
Prashna Upanishad 1.4

Meaning · English
The Creator wanted to bring forth life, so he practiced discipline. Through this effort, he produced a pair: matter and breath, to create all beings.
The source of existence began with a desire to populate the universe. To achieve this, the Creator engaged in an intense process of inner focus and discipline. This effort resulted in the creation of two fundamental forces. One is the physical substance of the world, and the other is the vital energy or breath. Together, these two opposing but complementary elements serve as the building blocks for every living thing.
Think of a painter mixing a single base color with a catalyst to create a medium that can then be split into a thousand different hues. The base color and the catalyst are like matter and breath; neither is a finished painting, but together they make every possible image on the canvas possible.
