Ravana came back through Lanka's gate beaten, like an elephant brought down by a lion. Rama's arrows had done that to him. He sat on his golden throne and spoke to his giants in a low voice. "All my penance was for nothing. Indra called me his equal, and now a mortal frightens me. Brahma warned me long ago. He said gods, demons and serpents could never kill me, but that I should fear the men I looked down on. Anaranya warned me too, that a prince of his line would ruin me. Vedavati said it as she died by my insult, and she was born again as Janaka's daughter, Rama's wife. Nandisvara said it, and Uma, and Rambha, and Varuna's daughter. The hour is close. Guard every gate. And wake Kumbhakarna."

Kumbhakarna had lain asleep for months under Brahma's curse. Ravana's lords went to his dwelling, a cave a league wide, sweet with flowers and bright with gold. They carried garlands, and heaps of meat and blood. His breath came out of him like a gale, so strong they could barely stand in it. He lay stretched on a golden bed. They piled buffaloes, boars and deer beside him, fanned his face with flowers and burned incense. Then they shouted like thunder, blew conchs, beat drums and cymbals and horns, until birds outside dropped dead from the noise. He slept on. They struck his chest with clubs, maces and broken rock. He did not move. They brought elephants, camels and horses, poured a hundred pails of water over him, and bit and tore at his ears.

They tied maces together and beat his head and face, and drove elephants to stamp on his chest. That weight finally broke his sleep. He yawned, hungry and thirsty, his mouth gaping like the fire under the ocean, his eyes burning like comets. They pointed to the meat. He ate it all and drank wine and blood. When he was done they bowed, afraid, and he asked, still drowsy, "Why have you woken me? It had better be important." Yupaksha answered, "No god frightens us. Men are at our walls. Rama has come for the wife Ravana took, with an army of vanaras. One vanara already burned Lanka and killed Aksha. And Rama has beaten our king and let him go." Kumbhakarna said, "I will crush them. Their princes' blood is mine." He set off, and the earth shook.

From near the wall Rama saw a figure taller than every other, and the vanaras running from it. "Vibhishana, who is that?" Vibhishana said, "Kumbhakarna, my brother. He beat Yama and made Indra tremble. As a newborn he ate a thousand men. When Indra hurled his thunderbolt at him, he tore a tusk off Airavata and drove Indra back. The gods begged Brahma for help, and Brahma cursed him to lie as if dead. Ravana pleaded that he not be cut down like that, and Brahma allowed this: he would sleep six months and wake for one day. Now Ravana has woken him to feed on our army. Tell the vanaras it is only a machine, not a living giant." Rama told Nila to put troops at every gate and block every lane with rocks and trees.

Kumbhakarna walked down Lanka's royal road while people threw flowers on him from their houses. He came into the hall where Ravana sat in despair, and Ravana's face lit up. Kumbhakarna touched his brother's feet. "Tell me what you want. What has broken my sleep?" Ravana answered angrily, "A fine time to sleep. Rama has crossed the sea with the vanara king, and my bravest are dead. Go out and save Lanka. No one in earth or heaven can match you." Kumbhakarna laughed. "We warned you, I and all your counsellors, and you would not listen. Give Sita back, as Vibhishana said." Ravana frowned. "Will you lecture your elder brother? If I erred, this is no time for blame. Mend it." Kumbhakarna softened. "Then let the past go. Today I will kill Rama, Lakshmana, Sugriva and Hanuman."

Mahodar spoke against him. "Why boast like a boy? Rama killed thousands at Janasthana. You would be waking a deadly snake. King, here is a better plan. Announce that four of us, led by Kumbhakarna, will kill Rama. If we win, good. If not, we come back bleeding with his arrows in us and say we ate the princes. Celebrate, give gifts, and then go to Sita. When she believes she is a widow, far from home, she will turn to you." Kumbhakarna turned from him in contempt. "A real fighter does not thunder without rain. Do not listen to men like this." Ravana laughed. "Mahodar is afraid. Go, brother, like Yama himself." He hung his own jewelled chain on Kumbhakarna's neck. Kumbhakarna took his black iron spear, stained with old blood, and marched out with a great host behind him.

He passed the gate and roared, and the hills and the shore roared back. The vanaras saw him coming, a giant neither Indra nor Yama could defeat, and ran. Angada, Vali's son, held his ground. "Nala, Nila, Kumud, Gavaksha, why are you running like cowards? He is no match for us." They stopped and threw mountain peaks and flowering trees at him. He did not even seem to feel it. Then he charged like a forest fire, and they fell before him. Some ran to the shore and the bridge, some climbed trees, some hid in caves. Angada called again, "There is nowhere on earth to hide. Will a whole army run from one?" They answered, "We have seen our best die. We want to live." But Angada spoke gently to them, and they came back and formed up again.

They charged again, ready to die. He swung his mace and killed eight thousand, then seven hundred more, and ate the fallen. Dvivida threw a mountain that flew over him and crushed giants behind. Hanuman rained rocks that his spear knocked aside, then struck him with a wooded hill. Kumbhakarna reeled, then hit Hanuman on the chest so hard the blood poured out, and Hanuman roared in pain. Nila threw a peak; he punched it to powder. Five chieftains rushed him. He threw Rishabha down senseless, struck down Nila with his fist, felled Sarabh with his knee, and overpowered Gavaksha. Thousands came at Gandhamadana's call. He gathered them in his arms and ate them, though some escaped out through his nostrils and his ears. Then Angada hit him on the cheek with a peak, but was seized by the wrist and dashed senseless to the ground.

Sugriva hurled a hill. It bounced off the giant's chest. Kumbhakarna threw his spear; Hanuman caught it and snapped it over his knee. Then a peak struck Sugriva senseless, and the giant carried him off into Lanka while people showered flowers on him. Sugriva woke, bit and tore at the giant's side until he was dropped, and leapt back over the wall to Rama. Kumbhakarna came out raging, killing vanaras and his own giants alike. Lakshmana's arrows pierced his armour, and the giant said, "Well fought. You have faced one Indra fears. But it is Rama I want." Lakshmana laughed. "There he stands." Kumbhakarna ran at Rama. Rama's arrows made fire burst from his mouth and knocked his weapons from his hands, yet he killed a thousand more with his fists. He threw a rock; Rama's arrows shattered it.

Rama said, "Come, giant. You face the destroyer of your race." Kumbhakarna answered, "I am no Khara or Viradha. Test your strength on me, and then I will eat you." Rama shot the arrows that had pierced the Sal trees and killed Vali. They struck and did nothing. Then he loosed the dart of the Wind-God, and it tore off the giant's arm and the mace with it. Kumbhakarna grabbed a tree and charged; Indra's dart cut off his other arm. Two crescent-headed arrows took his legs, and the earth and sea echoed with their fall. Last, Rama drew Indra's own deadliest shaft. It cut through his armoured neck. The great head rolled down and smashed a gate, a tower and a wall. The body fell into the sea, crushing the creatures of the deep. The gods rejoiced, and their song filled the sky.
