The story · English
The sacred parva day of the sacrifice had come, but the atmosphere turned sudden and violent. A terrifying wind swept in, raining dust, and a stench of pus spread on every side. Then Balvala made a rain of filth fall on the sacrificial hall, and he appeared there holding a trident. He was a monstrous sight, his body immense and his skin like a heap of crushed kohl. His hair and beard glowed like heated copper, and he bared fierce fangs beneath a furrowed brow.
Seeing this demon, Rāma remembered his weapons: the musala club that had shattered enemy armies and the plough used to subdue demons. In a flash of anger, Balarāma sprang into action. With the point of his plough he caught Balvala, who was moving through the sky, and dragged the monster down. Then, with a powerful stroke of his musala, he struck the creature on the head. Balvala crashed to the earth, his forehead split open. He let out a piteous cry and bled profusely, falling like a mountain shattered by the strike of a thunderbolt.
The sages praised Rāma for this victory, gave him blessings that always come true, and anointed him, as the gods once anointed Indra, the slayer of Vritra. They gave him the Vaijayantī garland of unfading lotuses, along with two heavenly garments and ornaments. With their leave, Balarāma set out with the brahmins to seek purification. He bathed in the Kaushiki river, went to the lake from which the Sarayu flows, and followed the Sarayu downstream to Prayaga. After bathing there and offering satisfaction to the gods, he visited the ashram of Pulaha. Then he bathed in the Gomati, Gandaki, Vipasha and Shona rivers, and traveled to Gaya to offer oblations to his ancestors.
His journey went on. He bathed where the Ganga meets the sea, and on Mahendra mountain he bowed to Parashurama. He visited the Seven Godavaris and the Bhimarathi, saw Skanda, Shrishaila and Venkata, then Kamakoshni, the city of Kanchi, the Kaveri and Srirangam, where Hari resides. After Rishabhadri and Southern Mathura he came to the Setu in the ocean, which destroys great sins, and gave ten thousand cows to brahmins. He visited the Kritamala and the Tamraparni, and on the great Malaya mountain bowed to the sage Agastya; blessed by him, he went on to the southern ocean, where he saw the goddess Durga, called Kanya. At Phalguna he bathed in the Panchapsaras lake, where Vishnu dwells, and gave ten thousand more cows. Through Kerala, Gokarna, Shurparaka, the Dandaka forest and the Reva he came back to Prabhasa.
At Prabhasa he heard from brahmins that the war of the Kurus and Pandavas had killed nearly all the kings. He went to Vinashana to stop the mace duel between Bhima and Duryodhana. Yudhishthira, the twins, Krishna and Arjuna bowed to him and stood silent. 'You are equally matched,' Balarāma told the two fighters. 'One is stronger, the other more skilled. Neither of you can win, so end this fruitless fight.' But each remembered the other's insults and wrongs, and they would not listen. Accepting it as fate, he went to Dvaraka. When he came back to Naimisha, the sages joyfully performed every sacrifice for him, and he taught them pure knowledge. He took the final ritual bath with his wife. Whoever remembers Balarāma's wondrous deeds morning and evening becomes dear to Vishnu.
