The story · English
There was once a Brahmin named Sudama who was a dear friend of Krishna. He was a man of profound wisdom, entirely detached from the cravings of the senses and possessing a peaceful soul. Despite his spiritual wealth, he lived in extreme poverty. His wife, a devoted woman, lived in a state of constant hunger and hardship, wearing only tattered clothes. One day, with a pale face and trembling with the weight of their misery, she approached her husband. 'My dear,' she said, 'the Lord of Dwarka, the husband of Lakshmi and the protector of all Brahmins, is your friend. Go to him. He is the refuge of the virtuous. He will surely provide for us and save our family from this suffering.'
The Brahmin listened gently to his wife's repeated pleas. He realized that seeing Krishna was the greatest possible gain one could achieve. He decided to go, but he felt he could not arrive empty-handed. He asked his wife if there was anything at all in the house that he could offer as a gift. She begged four handfuls of flattened rice from the neighbouring brahmins, carefully tied them in a piece of old cloth and gave them to him. With this humble offering, the Brahmin set out for Dwarka. As he walked, his mind was filled with a single, trembling thought: 'How will I ever get to see Krishna?'
In Dwarka, he passed three gates of guards and three courtyards among the homes of the Andhakas and Vrishnis. He walked past thousands of magnificent palaces until he reached the home of Krishna. As soon as Krishna saw his old friend from a distance, he leaped up from his beloved's couch. He rushed toward the Brahmin and embraced him with immense joy, his eyes filling with tears of affection. Krishna led him to his own couch, seating him in the place of honor. With his own hands, the Lord washed the feet of his friend and treated him with the highest hospitality.
Krishna honored Sudama with fragrances of sandalwood, agarwood and saffron, and offered him incense, lamps, betel leaf and a cow. The goddess Rukmini herself fanned the ragged Brahmin with a chamara. The women of the inner palace were bewildered. They watched as the Lord of the Universe served a man dressed in filthy, tattered rags, who looked more like a beggar than a guest. 'What great merit must this man have performed,' they whispered, 'to be embraced by the Teacher of the Three Worlds, while the Goddess Lakshmi herself is set aside?' The two friends sat together, holding each other's hands, as they reminisced about the days they spent together as students in the gurukula.
Krishna asked his friend if he remembered their time spent serving their teacher. He spoke of how they once entered a vast forest to gather firewood for the guru's wife, when a fierce wind blew, the rain fell relentlessly, the sun set and darkness swallowed every direction. They had been tossed by the waters, clinging to one another in the dark. When their teacher Sandipani found them at sunrise the next morning, he told them that serving the teacher with a pure heart is the highest duty. Krishna said that only by the guru's grace does a person become fulfilled and reach peace. Sudama replied that nothing was left unattained for one who had lived with Krishna, and that the Lord, whose body is the Veda, living with a guru was mere play-acting.
