The Devotion of the Poor Brahmin

Bhagavata Purana 10.81 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

Lord Krishna sat with a learned Brahmin, looking upon him with a smile of deep affection. Krishna spoke kindly to him, asking what gift the man had brought Him from his home. He explained that even the smallest gift, if offered with love by a devotee, brings Him immense joy; however, the grandest offering from someone without devotion cannot satisfy Him. Krishna told the Brahmin, 'If someone offers Me a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even a bit of water with true devotion, I accept it as a gift from a pure soul.'

The Brahmin felt shy and embarrassed before the husband of the goddess of fortune. Keeping his head bowed, he did not hand over his handful of flattened rice. Krishna, who sees into every heart, knew he had come not for wealth but to please his devoted wife, and resolved to give him riches rare even for the gods. Krishna Himself pulled the flattened rice from the cloth tied in the Brahmin's garment, asking, 'What is this?' He said these grains satisfied Him and the whole universe. He ate one handful, and as He reached for a second, Lakshmi, His devoted queen, caught His hand, saying this much was enough for the man's prosperity in this world and the next.

The Brahmin spent that night in Achyuta's palace, eating and drinking so comfortably that he felt he had reached heaven. Next morning Krishna honoured him and walked with him some way along the road. The Brahmin went home without wealth, never having asked for any, abashed yet content with the Lord's sight. Remembering how Krishna had embraced him, seated him on His own bed and pressed his feet while the queen fanned him, he concluded that the merciful Lord had given him no wealth lest he grow proud and forget Him. Nearing home, he found it surrounded by celestial mansions shining like the sun, fire and moon, with gardens of singing birds and ponds of blooming lotuses and lilies. As he wondered whose place this was, finely adorned men and doe-eyed women, radiant as gods, welcomed him with song and music.

His wife, seeing her husband return, rushed out of the house in a state of overwhelmed joy. The Brahmin was stunned to see her shining like a celestial goddess among maidservants wearing gold necklaces. He entered a palace that rivaled the home of Mahendra, featuring hundreds of jeweled pillars, ivory beds trimmed with gold, golden seats, and canopies hung with pearls. Jewelled lamps shone on walls of crystal and emerald, and the women there wore jewels. He realized that his sudden prosperity was not random, but a result of the grace of the great soul who had happily accepted his handful of flattened rice.

The Brahmin decided that he would never forget this kindness, praying that in every future life he might remain a servant to such a compassionate Lord. He recognized that the Lord does not grant riches, kingdom or powers to a devotee of immature understanding, for He sees how the pride of the wealthy brings them down. Resolved in this way, he lived with his wife, enjoying things without attachment. By focusing his mind on the divine, the Brahmin eventually broke the bonds of material existence and attained the eternal destination of the saintly. Whoever hears of the Lord's kindness to Brahmins gains devotion to Him and is freed from the bonds of karma.
