The story · English
While Krishna and Balarāma were living in Dwārakā, a great solar eclipse occurred, much like the one that happens at the end of a cosmic age. Seeking spiritual merit, people from all directions traveled to the holy field of Kurukshetra. This is the land where Paraśurāma, the greatest of warriors, once cleared the earth of oppressive kings, creating great lakes from the blood of the fallen. Though no karma could touch him, the Lord Paraśurāma performed a sacrifice there to teach the world, as an ordinary man would to wash away sin. Many people gathered there for the pilgrimage, including the citizens of Bharat, the Vrishnis, and figures like Akrura and Vasudeva.
Gada, Pradyumna and Sāmba went with Suchandra, Shuka and Sāraṇa, while Aniruddha stayed behind with the commander Kritavarma to guard the city. The pilgrims traveled in divine chariots and on swift horses, with elephants trumpeting like clouds and soldiers who shone like Vidyadharas. Radiant in golden garlands and celestial clothes, they bathed in the sacred lakes, fasted and spent time in deep meditation. They offered the Brahmanas cows adorned with cloth, garlands and gold necklaces, praying for an eternal devotion to Krishna. After feeding the priests, the Vrishnis rested in the cool shade of trees. There they spotted old friends and relatives: kings of Matsya, Ushinara, Kaushalya, Vidarbha, the Kurus and the Srinjayas, and of Kamboja, Kaikaya, Madra, Kunti, Anarta and Kerala.
Nanda and the cowherds, along with the longing Gopis, also arrived. When these groups saw one another after so long, their hearts blossomed like lotuses. They embraced tightly, their eyes streaming with tears and their voices choked with joy. The women greeted each other with smiles and affectionate talk, embracing with arms stained with kunkuma paste. The younger members bowed to the elders, everyone asked after one another's well-being, and they talked together of Krishna. Kunti saw her brothers, her sisters and their sons, her parents, her brothers' wives and Mukunda, and in talking with them her grief finally vanished. She told her brother, 'I feel I have been unlucky that you did not remember me during my times of trouble.'
Kunti's brother Vasudeva reminded her that the world is a play of the Divine; we are all under the will of the Lord. He explained how they had all been scattered by the power of Kansa, only to be brought back together by fate. The kings, including Bhishma, Drona, the Pandavas, and Vidura, were filled with wonder to see the magnificent form of Krishna. They praised the Vrishnis for their luck, saying, 'You are the most fortunate of men to behold Krishna, who is difficult for even the greatest yogis to see. His fame, the water that washed his feet and his words purify the world, and the earth, her fortune burnt away by time, draws strength from the touch of his lotus feet and showers every desire upon us.'
Hearing that the Yadus had come, Nanda arrived with the cowherds and their carts, and Vasudeva embraced him with deep love. Krishna and Balarāma bowed to Nanda and Yashoda, too choked with tears to speak, and the two took them on their laps; Rohini and Devaki thanked Yashoda for her friendship. The Gopis, finding Krishna at last, embraced him in their hearts. Meeting them alone, Krishna smiled and asked, 'Do you remember us, who stayed away so long to destroy the enemy? Do you think us ungrateful? The Lord unites and separates beings as the wind does clouds. Devotion to me brings immortality; I am the beginning and end, inside and outside, of all beings, as space, water, earth, air and fire are of all physical things.' So taught, the Gopis prayed, 'Nalinanabha, may your lotus feet, on which great yogis meditate, always rise in our minds even at home, our support out of the well of samsara.'
