After the Lord had shown his grace to the Gopis, he turned to Yudhishthira and all his kinsmen and asked how they fared. Yudhishthira and his kinsmen were filled with joy; they bowed low, their eyes fixed on the Lord's feet, and answered with hearts full of devotion. They told him that no misfortune could ever come to those who drink the nectar that flows from the lotus-feet of the Lord. They spoke of the bliss of knowing the Eternal, the one who cuts through the forgetfulness of the body and the illusions of Maya. Listening to this, the women of the Andhaka and Kuru clans gathered together and shared stories of Govinda with one another. Then Draupadi turned to Krishna's wives and asked them to tell how the Lord had married them.

Rukmini began, describing how Krishna had won her. She recalled the kings who raised their bows to give her to Shishupala, the king of Chedi, and how Krishna carried her off like a lion taking its share from a flock of goats and sheep; she prayed that his feet, the home of Sri, might be hers to worship. Satyabhama recalled that her father, grieving his brother's death, had falsely accused Krishna. To wipe away that stain, Krishna defeated Jambavan, the king of the bears, and gave the jewel to her father, who in fear gave her to the Lord though she had been promised to another. Jambavati then spoke of how her father Jambavan, not knowing that Krishna was his own Lord, the husband of Sita, had fought him for twenty-seven days; when at last he knew him, he clasped his feet and offered her to him with the jewel.

Kalindi told the women that the Lord, learning that she was practicing austerities in the hope of touching his feet, came to her with his friend Arjuna and took her hand; now she was the one who swept his house. Mitravinda remembered her Svayamvara, where Krishna defeated the kings and carried her off like a lion taking its share from a pack of dogs, then defeated her brothers when they insulted him; she wished to be the one who washed his feet. Satya shared how she had watched him tame seven powerful bulls with sharp horns—bulls her father had used to test the strength of kings. Krishna had bound them in play, as children tie up young goats. Because he had proven his strength and defeated the royal warriors on the path, she desired to be his servant and wife.

Bhadra and Lakshmana shared their stories next. Bhadra spoke of how her father had given her to Krishna, her maternal cousin, and how she had gone to him with an army and her friends; she prayed that in every birth her karma led her to, she might touch his feet, for that touch was her own good. Lakshmana recalled that she had set her heart on Mukunda after hearing Narada's songs, and her father, Brihatsena, knowing her wish, had arranged a contest: a fish covered from outside, seen only as its reflection in the water. Thousands of kings and teachers came to try the one bow; some could not even string it, while the kings of Magadha, Ambashtha and Chedi, Bhima, Duryodhana and Karna strung it but could not find the target. Partha alone found it, but his arrow only touched the fish and did not cut it.

Finally, the Lord took up the bow, looked once at the reflection in the water, and, as the sun stood high in the sky, his arrow cut the fish and brought it down. As the heavens rained flowers and drums sounded, Lakshmana entered the arena wearing gold ornaments and a silk garment, placing her garland around the neck of Murari. The rival kings could not bear it and attacked; Krishna set her on his chariot and raised the Sharnga bow, and as Daruka drove, the pursuing kings were cut down or fled. They entered the city through gates adorned with flags. Then the queens whom Krishna had freed and married after slaying Bhauma spoke: they wanted neither empire nor heaven, only the dust of his feet, scented with the saffron of Sri's breasts, the feet that the women of Vraja, the Pulinda women, the grasses and creepers, and the cows and cowherds longed to touch as he herded the cows.
