The story · English
At the pilgrimage camp at Kurukshetra, Pritha, Gandhari the daughter of Subala, Draupadi, Subhadra, the kings' wives and the gopis heard the queens tell of their love for Krishna, and they were overcome with emotion, their eyes clouded with tears. As the women talked among themselves and the men among themselves, a magnificent assembly of seers arrived, seeking the sight of Krishna and Rama. Among them were Narada, Chyavana, Asita, Vishvamitra, and the venerable Bhrigu, alongside Markandeya, Brihaspati, and Agastya. Seeing these world-honored saints, the kings and the Pandavas rose instantly to greet them. Krishna and Rama welcomed them with deep reverence, offering them seats, water for their feet, garlands, and incense, ensuring every ritual of hospitality was perfectly observed for their honored guests.
As the sages sat in comfort, Krishna spoke to them while the great assembly listened in silence. He remarked that he and those with him were fortunate indeed to have attained the fruit of their birth by seeing these masters of yoga, a sight that even the gods struggle to achieve. He spoke candidly, noting that for people of little austerity, simply seeing, touching, or questioning such sages is a rare blessing. He reminded them that holy waters and images of clay and stone purify only after a long time, yet saints purify a person simply by being seen. He warned that one who takes the body for the self, earthen images for the only objects of worship and water for the only pilgrimage, but never regards wise men so, is truly blind to the truth.
The sages were momentarily bewildered by Krishna's profound words, but after deep reflection, they smiled and addressed him as the Teacher of the World. They marvelled at how the Creator of the Universe could hide his majesty behind the veil of Maya, appearing as a mere human while effortlessly creating and protecting the worlds. They praised him, saying, 'You manifest your power to protect your devotees and to destroy the wicked, guiding us through the eternal path of Veda.' They bowed to the Supreme Soul, acknowledging that while the Vrishnis and kings might see only a man, they recognized him as the Eternal Time and the Lord of all existence.
Vasudeva, the illustrious father, approached the sages and asked how the bondage of karma might be removed by karma itself. The sages explained that the path to peace is through faith and the performance of sacrifices to Vishnu, the Lord of all sacrifices. They told Vasudeva that a person is born with three debts—to the gods, the sages, and the ancestors—cleared through sacrifice, study, and children. Since he was already free of the debts to the sages and the ancestors, only the debt to the gods remained, to be cleared by sacrifice. Vasudeva chose them as his priests and, with his eighteen wives beside him and the finely dressed Vrishnis in lotus garlands around him, performed the rites, gave rich gifts to the priests and bathed with them at Rama-hrada.
After the ceremonies were complete, the relatives with their wives and children, Dhritarashtra, Vidura, the Pandavas, Pritha, Bhishma, Drona, the priests, Narada and Vyasa embraced the Yadus and departed for their own lands. Vasudeva, filled with emotion, took Nanda's hand, reflecting on the unbreakable bond of brotherly love. He wept, remembering the friendship Nanda had shown him, and lamented that once he had been helpless to do him any good, and now wealth had blinded him to his own kin. Nanda, a guest honoured by the Yadus, stayed three months out of love for Krishna and Rama, then departed for Mathura with his own gopas, gopis and kin, laden with gifts and seen off by the Yadus. As the festivities concluded and the guests left, the Vrishnis returned to Dwaravati, sharing stories of their pilgrimage and the joyful reunion of old friends.
