The story · English
The plain was covered with the dead and the dying, and still Rama drew his great bow and rained arrows on the giants. Angada and Sugriva fought on for the vanaras in a fury. Huge rocks crushed Mahodar and Mahaparsva through chest and side, and Virupaksha fell in his own blood and did not rise. When Ravana saw all three of them down, he shouted to his charioteer. 'Drive on. These proud vanaras die today, and today our griefs end, for the besieged city and the chiefs we have lost. Rama is a tree whose lovely fruit is Sita, and the vanara lords are its sheltering branches. With this arm I will tear it up by the roots.' The horses sprang forward and the earth shook under the wheels. Wherever he went the vanaras fell or fled, until he reached the two sons of Raghu.
Rama looked at his enemy and drew his bow until the whole land echoed with its clang. Lakshmana shot arrow after arrow at Ravana, but Ravana met each with one of his own, so it dropped headless to the ground, and the darts he poured back were so thick that Lakshmana had to hold his hand. Then Ravana and Rama came face to face. The sky went dark with their arrows, like storm clouds twined with lightning and driven by the wind. Not even when Indra struck down Vritra was a fight fiercer. Both knew every art of war. Red-eyed with rage, Ravana planted a flight of arrows in Rama's brow, and Rama, badly wounded, bore that crown of arrows and did not give way. He spoke a spell over a terrible dart and loosed it, but it bounced off Ravana's armour.
Ravana strung his bow again, and strange weapons hissed through the air, some beaked like vultures and kites, some carrying the heads of lions, tigers, wolves and snakes. Troubled by that storm from an arm that never tired, Rama loosed his dart of fire, sacred to the god of flame, which burned whatever it touched. More blazing arrows followed, some like shooting stars, some like lightning, one like the morning sun. Where they burned, Ravana's darts were turned aside, and as they flew off they struck thousands dead. Ravana's anger doubled. Angry but not afraid, he called up a mightier charm, and spears, pikes, javelins, maces and swords came hurtling from his hand like fire in a gale. But Rama's weapons, gifts from the powers of heaven, were stronger, and every one of Ravana's fell blunted and spent.
Then Vibhishana swung his huge mace and killed the horses that drew Ravana's chariot. In fury Ravana hurled a heavy spear at him that flashed like fire, but Rama's arrows stopped it and it lay harmless on the ground. Ravana took up a mightier spear, one Death himself would have feared. That throw would have killed Vibhishana, but Lakshmana's arrows struck the giant's armour thick as hail. Ravana turned and looked at him. 'You again. You have defied me again and saved Vibhishana from his death. Then take this spear in his place. Its point will split your heart.' He flung it with all his fury, a spear forged by Maya with magic art, hung with ringing bells, flickering like a snake's tongue. It struck Lakshmana, and he fell. Rama sighed, and a tear clouded his eye. Then the grief gave way to vengeance, and his arrows streamed out until Ravana, overcome with terror, turned and fled.
But Rama, the pride of Raghu's line, could only look at his brother's face, and the sight broke him. He turned to Sushena. 'Where is my strength now? How can I fight, when my brother, my noble Lakshmana, lies dead in front of me? I can't see for weeping. My hand has dropped the bow. My heart is sick. If only I could lie down beside him and die. Life, war, victory, none of it means anything if Lakshmana is gone.' He bent over him. 'Why won't you look at me? Have you no answer for me? Did you go on to the other worlds alone, without letting your brother come with you? Speak to me. Get up, brother, and look at me. Weren't you always beside me, in the dark forest and on the windy hills? Weren't you the one who calmed my grief and my temper, and shared every trouble I had?'
Sushena, the vanara chieftain, answered him. 'Great prince, put these thoughts away. Your tears are wasted. Lakshmana is not dead. Death has left no mark on his brow, and the light is still in his face. His skin is clear and his palms are tinted like lotus flowers. Take heart, Rama. This is not how life leaves a body.' Then he turned. 'Hanuman, go to the tall peak of Mahodaya, where the herbs grow that give life and strength. Bring the leaves, and Lakshmana will be well again.' The son of the Wind-God flew off through the clouds. At the mountain he did not stop to search. He tore the whole peak from its base, trees and all, and carried it back. Sushena, amazed, found the herb and crushed its fragrant leaves over Lakshmana's face. Breathing that sweet scent, Lakshmana was healed, and rose to his feet, fresh and strong.
