The story · English
Then Raghu's son put his sorrow aside. He picked up his fallen bow again and sent a storm of arrows at the lord of Lanka. Ravana, drawn by fresh horses his captains had brought, turned and came back to fight. His glittering chariot rolled close, the way the sun springs across the sky. He bent his bow, and his arrows came down like thunderbolts, like dark rain clouds pouring onto a mountain. The giant rode high in his chariot, while Rama fought on foot. From the heights of heaven the Gods watched this unequal fight and were angry. Indra, whom the heavenly hosts honour, called his charioteer. "Hurry down, Matali," he said. "Lend my chariot to Raghu's son. Speak to him with words that give him heart, and every God will bless you for it."
Matali bowed and brought out the great chariot. Its little bells could be heard from far off, and it shone like the morning sun, bright with gold, pearl and lapis. He yoked the tawny horses that ran faster than a storm, drove down the slope of heaven, and stopped beside Rama. "Climb up, my lord," he said humbly. "The Gods have sent you this chariot. Look, here is Indra's own mighty bow, sent by the Gods who are on your side. Here is a coat of shining armour, a spear, and arrows that never miss." Rama took heart at this kindness from the Immortals and mounted the chariot. Now both warriors rode, and the fight grew fiercer still. Every arrow Ravana shot turned into a serpent, red with flame, and coiled around Rama's limbs, its fiery jaws open and its tongue flickering.
But when Rama called up the weapon of Garuda, the Feathered King, and loosed his arrows, every serpent fled in fear. Ravana strung his bow again and sent showers of shafts at Rama, and as he raced past he struck Matali with a dart. Another arrow brought Rama's banner down onto the sand, and Indra's heavenly horses fell dead under that iron storm. Terror and despair came over the Gods and the spirits of the air. The sea's white waves rose up in foam as if to drench the sky. Angry clouds covered the sun, the kindly lights of heaven grew pale, and fiery Mars glared against the gentler stars. Then Rama's eyes blazed. He lifted Indra's spear, its bells ringing, its bright head flashing light across the sky.
The spear came down fast and crushed Ravana's lance, bending it out of shape. Then Rama's arrows fell like sleet on Ravana's brave, swift horses, and they dropped dead. Rama pressed in hard and drove his shafts into the giant's broad chest, and streams of blood ran down the weary giant's limbs and side. The fight went on after that. Ravana, the telling says, scolded his own charioteer sharply for being timid and for doubting his master's strength, and ordered him to charge straight at Rama next time. At last Ravana stood apart, faint and bleeding fast, raging in his heart. Then the sage Agastya, moved with pity for Rama, came to him and spoke gently. "Rama, open your heart and your ears, and hear a truth that does not end."
"Worship the rising sun with his golden rays, the light of all the worlds. He is the king of everything, honoured by Gods and demons alike, and Gods, demons and men all owe their safety to him. He is Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He is Time and Death, the Moon, the Ruler of the Sea. He is air, life and fire, the source of all things. He brings the seasons, and he drives through heaven behind seven flaming horses, parting the clouds of night with shining darts. He commands the rains, and the rivers have no surer friend. Lord of twelve forms, I bow to you. Rama, whoever worships the Lord of Light truly will never be crushed by trouble. Give yourself to him with all your heart, and you will know his saving power, victorious over your giant enemy."
