Highest Worlds Still Turn

Bhagavad Gita 8.16

Meaning · English

All worlds, up to the abode of Brahma, are subject to rebirth, Arjun. But having attained Me, son of Kunti, there is never rebirth.

Two words carry the verse. Punar-avartin means turning back again: punar is again, avartin is one who revolves. Upetya means having come up to, having arrived and reached. Krishna tells Arjuna that every world, even the highest one, the abode of Brahma, belongs to the turning. A soul who reaches such a world is still a soul who will come back. Only one arrival ends that: reaching Krishna himself, after which, he says, janma, birth, is simply not found. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just called rebirth a temporary place of misery, and now he closes a loophole. A listener might think that if ordinary life turns, a very exalted afterlife must be the exit. Krishna says it is not. Height does not decide the matter; whom one has reached does. For the listener, this asks for a change in aim, away from a better place and toward Krishna. Shankara reads Krishna as the Supreme Self, and says return ends where ignorance ends. Ramanuja reads Krishna as the Supreme Person, reached through devotion. Madhva reads the arrival as attaining Vishnu, with the soul remaining distinct from him.

A tall building has a top floor with a fine view. Riding the lift up gets you the view, but you are still inside the building, and the lift will take you down again. Only the street door leads out. The highest worlds are the top floor, and reaching Krishna is the door.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and list three things you are working toward this year. 2. Beside each, write one line about an ordinary morning a month after you get it. 3. Mark any item you expect to keep feeling the same way about, and any you expect to fade. 4. Sit for one minute with the marked ones and notice whether your effort is going where your list says it lasts.

A man in his sixties stands in the garden the morning after his daughter's wedding. The tent poles are coming down and the rented chairs are stacked on a truck. For months everything pointed at this day, and now it has passed. He feels glad and oddly flat at once. The verse speaks to that flatness. Krishna tells Arjuna that even the highest world is a place one turns back from, so a peak, however fine, was never the place to rest. In the garden, the man can let the day be what it was, a good one, without asking it to hold him up for the rest of his life. He can then ask what he was leaning on while he planned it, and what he can lean on now. Ordinary experience agrees that a long-awaited goal, once reached, rarely settles the mind for good. The verse does not take away the flatness or the missing of his daughter. It does not say the wedding mattered less. It points to something that does not end when the tent comes down.
