Bhagavad Gita 8.15
Meaning · English
Having come to me, the great souls do not take birth again in this temporary world, a place full of misery, because they have reached the highest perfection.
Three words carry the verse. Duhkhalayam joins duhkha, pain or misery, with alaya, a dwelling. Krishna calls the world of birth a house where misery lives. Ashashvatam means not lasting: the place is temporary, so nothing gained there can be kept. Mahatmanah joins maha, great, with atma, self. These are people whose vision has grown larger than their small concerns. Sansiddhi is complete accomplishment, a task finished. Krishna tells Arjuna that those great souls who reach him do not take birth again in that painful, passing world. Reaching him is the highest perfection, and nothing is left to be completed. The verse answers a worry left open by the one before it, which spoke of how easily he is reached: what does the one who reaches him gain? The answer is an end to the round of returning, with its pain. The classical teachers read this differently. Shankara takes reaching Krishna as knowing the Supreme Self, and rebirth ends with that knowing. Ramanuja takes it as the devoted soul arriving at the Lord's own abode. Madhva takes it as release in which the soul stays distinct from God and is held by his grace. Nothing is demanded of the listener here. Krishna states where the path ends.
A railway waiting room has hard benches, a cold draught, and people glancing up at the departures board every few minutes. Nobody settles there, because it is only a place to pass through. A traveller who reaches her own home stops reading the board. The world of repeated birth is the waiting room, and reaching Krishna is arriving home.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before sleep and name one worry that feels permanent. Ask whether it was weighing on you a year ago. 2. Tomorrow, when something uncomfortable comes, such as a queue, a sharp remark or an ache, say quietly, "this is passing through." Notice whether your grip loosens at all. 3. Once this week, spend five minutes thinking of Krishna, in any form you know, and set the day's load down while you do. Notice how you feel when you stop.
A woman sits beside her father's hospital bed at three in the morning. The monitor beeps, the corridor is bright, and every small change in his breathing feels like a verdict. She holds on to each hour as though losing it means losing him. Krishna's teaching gives her a different footing. The world of birth is a place that does not last and is full of misery, and the great souls who reach him do not return to it. She can see that the fear in her chest belongs to a passing place, and that her love for her father is not measured by how tightly she grips the hour. Her mind can turn toward Krishna, the one refuge the text names, and rest there for a few breaths. Ordinary experience agrees that a steadier breath makes the next decision easier. The verse does not promise that her father will recover, and it does not take grief away. It is no substitute for the doctors, whose questions she still has to ask and answer.
