Remembering Without Break
Bhagavad Gita 8.14
Meaning · English
For the one whose mind goes nowhere else, who remembers me always and day after day, I am easy to reach, Arjun, son of Pritha. He is a yogi constantly engaged.
Three terms carry it. Ananya-chetas: ananya is "not another" and chetas is mind, so a mind with no second object it keeps running to. Nitya-yukta: nitya is constant, belonging to every day, and yukta is joined or yoked, so a person joined to the practice without gaps. Sulabha: su is "easily" and labha is "getting", so easy to obtain. Krishna tells Arjuna, whom he calls Partha, son of Pritha, that he is easy to reach for the one who remembers him always, regularly, and with an undivided mind. The ease does not come from the practice being light. It comes from the practice being unbroken. Just before this, Krishna spoke of remembering him at the hour of leaving the body. That hour cannot be rehearsed at the last minute, so he points to the daily habit that will already be there. What is asked is not a feat but steadiness: remembrance that is regular, single-minded and lasting. Shankara reads the yogi as one whose mind rests on the Lord alone, and the ease as the Lord's nearness to such a person. Ramanuja takes the remembrance as loving, unbroken meditation, which is devotion itself. Madhva takes it as constant devotion joined with knowledge of the Lord's greatness.
A path across a field is hard to find the first week. Walk the same line every morning and the grass dies, the earth packs flat, and the way is plain even in the dark. Daily remembrance is that worn path, and the easy reaching is the path being there when needed.
1. Choose one ordinary daily act that you do without thinking, such as the first sip of tea or washing your hands before a meal. 2. Each time you do it this week, pause for three breaths and bring to mind the one name or form of God you hold dear. 3. Keep it short and the same every day, even when you are busy or tired. 4. At the week's end, notice whether the thought now arrives before you reach for it.
A woman who sells vegetables is setting out her crates at five in the morning. Her hands are busy, a customer is already haggling, and her mind is racing toward the day's rent. The verse would not ask her to stop work or sit in silence. It would ask her to let one remembered name run beneath the counting and the weighing, returning to it each time the mind drifts. Step by step: she begins the day with it, touches it again between customers, and finds it waiting when a sharp word arrives. Ordinary experience confirms that what we repeat daily is what we reach for first when we are under strain. The verse does not promise that the rent will be paid, that the customer will be kind, or that grief and illness will pass her by. It is also no substitute for a doctor or for sensible planning where those are needed. It speaks of nearness to God through steadiness, as the text teaches it, not of an easier day.
