Meaning · English
Mosquito-small, the monkey set out for Lanka, remembering Hari. Lankini barred him: thieves are my food. One fist dropped her, vomiting blood. Rising, palms joined, she named Brahma's sign, and her merit in seeing Rama's messenger. Heaven and liberation, weighed against one moment of good company, fall short.
Three words carry it. Nisicari is a night-walker, Tulsidas's word for a demoness. Apavarga is liberation, the release from birth and death. Satsang is sat, the good or true, plus sanga, company: time spent with those who are good. The story runs like this. Hanuman shrinks to the size of a mosquito and goes in, remembering Hari. Lankini, the city's guardian, stops him. She insults him and says every thief is her meal. He strikes her once with his fist. She vomits blood and drops to the ground. Then she steadies herself, folds her hands and speaks shakily. When Ravana won his boon, Brahma left her a sign: the day a monkey's blow shakes her, the demons are finished. She calls herself fortunate to have seen Rama's messenger with her own eyes. Then Tulsidas draws the lesson in the doha. Put heaven's pleasures and liberation's peace on one pan of a scale, and a single moment of satsang on the other. The first pan does not equal it. The text gives this as the reason her blow becomes a blessing: she met a devotee, and the text counts that above both heaven and release.
A shopkeeper's balance holds a heaped pan of gold coins on one side. On the other lies a pinch of saffron, and it tips the beam down. The text weighs heaven and release against one moment with a good person and finds the small thing heavier.
