Meaning · English

Enter the city, do every task, with Kosala's king held in the heart: poison turns to nectar, foes to friends, the ocean to a cow's hoofprint, fire to cool. Tiny Hanuman searched house by house, saw Ravana asleep, no Sita; then a house marked with Rama's weapons, tulasi growing, and rejoiced.

Three words carry the passage. Kosalapura-raja is the king of Kosala, Rama, and hridaya rakhi means keeping him in the heart. Go-pada is a cow's hoofprint, the smallest puddle there is. Harimandira is a small shrine of Hari, Vishnu, and tulasika is the tulasi plant sacred to him. The first lines are Hanuman reminding himself, in Tulsidas's telling. Go into Lanka and finish the work, but carry Rama inside. Then comes the reason. When Rama's grace falls on someone, poison turns to nectar, an enemy turns friendly, the ocean shrinks to a hoofprint, fire goes cool, and heavy Sumeru weighs no more than a grain of dust. Then the story moves. Hanuman makes himself very small and enters the city remembering the Lord. He searches house after house and sees countless warriors. He reaches Ravana's palace, which Tulsidas calls too strange to describe. He finds Ravana asleep and no Sita there. Then he sees a lovely house with a shrine set apart. It is marked with Rama's weapons, its beauty past telling, and a young tulasi grove grows there. Hanuman is glad. Tulsidas gives the order of things plainly. Remembering Rama comes first, and the search follows from it. Reciters often read the opening lines as Hanuman's own thought, spoken to himself at the gate.

A traveller walks a strange town at night with one address held firmly in mind. Every dark lane, barking dog and shuttered shop is then only the way to that door. Rama in the heart is the address, and Lanka's streets are only the road to the work.
