Meaning · English
Lanka is a crowd of night-prowlers; where would a good man live here? Hanuman wonders. Vibhishana wakes, speaking Rama's name. Hanuman, in a brahmin's form, speaks; Vibhishana rises, bows and asks after his welfare. He asks whether the stranger is a servant of Hari, or Rama himself, lover of the lowly, come to bless him. Hanuman tells all; both thrill, lost in Rama's virtues.
Three words carry the passage. Sajjana is a good person, from sat, what is true or good. Haridasa is a servant of Hari, which here means Rama. Pulaka is the bristling of body hair, the shiver of gladness. The passage opens with Hanuman's doubt. Lanka is the home of nisicara, the night-roamers. Where would a sajjana live in such a place? Then Vibhishana wakes, and Hanuman hears him say Rama's name over and over. Hanuman is glad, and he takes the speaker for a good man. He decides to speak first, and his reason is that a sadhu does no harm. Tulsidas tells it this way: nothing is lost by approaching a saintly person. Hanuman takes a brahmin's form and says a few words. Vibhishana gets up at once, bows and asks after his welfare. He asks Hanuman to say who he is. Is he a haridasa? Or is he Rama himself, who loves the lowly, come to make Vibhishana fortunate? Vibhishana says his heart feels great love for the stranger. He calls himself fortunate if this is so. The doha gives the answer. Hanuman tells the whole story of Rama and then his own name. Both bodies thrill, and both minds sink into remembering Rama's virtues. The teaching is that a shared love of Rama lets two strangers know each other in a moment.
A traveller walks a dark street in a strange town, doubtful of every door. One window glows with a lamp. He knocks softly, and the person inside already knows why he has come. The lit window is Vibhishana's waking and his murmured name of Rama. The knock is Hanuman's greeting.
