And hear how she arose again from the body of Gauri, to slay the wicked daityas and Shumbha and Nishumbha, and to protect the worlds, a helper to the gods. Listen to that, as I have it. I will tell it to you exactly as it happened.

Medhas is closing one story and opening another, and this verse is the doorway. Three words carry it. Samudbhuta means arisen, from sam (together) and ud-bhu (to come up): she does not walk in from elsewhere, she comes up out of something. Gauri is the Goddess in her gentle, fair form, and the verse says the new appearance comes from Gauri's body. Upakarini means a doer of help, one who stands beside the gods when they cannot manage alone. Now the clauses. The Goddess arises again from Gauri's body. She comes to destroy the wicked daityas, and by name Shumbha and Nishumbha. She comes to protect the worlds, and she serves the gods as helper. Then Medhas turns to the king and asks him to listen, and promises to tell it as it happened, with nothing added. The reason it sits here is that Suratha has asked how the Goddess comes to the world. The first account showed her rising from the gods' gathered anger. Medhas now says that is not the only time. The Devi Mahatmya teaches that she returns when the need returns, and each time her purpose is the same: to stop the cruel and to shelter the worlds. What Medhas asks of Suratha is simple attention, and a hearing of the story as told.

A fire engine goes back to the station after one blaze. When another fire starts across town, the same engine is called out again, with the same crew and the same hoses. The Goddess is like that: she comes back when a new danger gathers, and the purpose of her coming does not change.
