Meaning · English
Having given the two of them the boon each had wished for, the Goddess vanished at once, while they were still praising her with devotion. So, having received the boon from the Goddess, Suratha, bull among warriors, will take birth from the Sun and become the Manu called Savarni.
Four words carry the passage. Varam is a boon, from the root vr, to choose: it is what a person picks, not what is handed down. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Antarhita means vanished, literally placed within or out of sight. Manu is the ruler-father of an age, from man, to think. Savarni is the name of the eighth Manu. Now the clauses. First, the Goddess gives both men the boon each wanted, the king his and the merchant his. Next, she disappears at once, and the two are still praising her in devotion when she goes. The praise does not call her back, and it was never a payment. Then Markandeya turns to the king. Suratha, called the best of warriors, has received the Goddess's boon. He will be born again from the Sun and become Manu Savarni. Why is this said here? Suratha came to the forest as a king who had lost everything. Markandeya closes the story by showing where that loss ends, in a place far larger than the kingdom he grieved over. The Goddess's word is kept, and the tale ends with the promise carried forward. The passage asks nothing of the listener. It reports that the Goddess gives what was asked, leaves without ceremony, and that a ruined king is named for a great office.
A traveller reaches the ticket window, asks for one fare, and has it slid across the counter. The clerk steps away before the thanks are finished. The Goddess is that giver: the boon is handed over fully, and her leaving does not take it back.
