Sundarkand 8
Meaning · English
Who forgets such a master and is not unhappy? Speaking Rama's virtues, they found rest beyond words. Vibhishana told the way; Hanuman reached the Ashoka grove, bowed in his mind to Sita: thin, one braid, eyes on her feet, mind in Rama's feet. Hanuman grieved.
Three Awadhi words carry this passage. Juguti means a device or means: Vibhishana tells Hanuman how to reach Sita, since Lanka is guarded. Bisrama is rest, and Tulsidas calls the rest Hanuman and Vibhishana find anirvacya, a Sanskrit word for what cannot be put into words. Pranama is the bow, and here Hanuman makes it silently, inside his mind. The opening line is the storyteller's own remark. Anyone who knows such a master and still forgets him wanders in sorrow. The commentators take this as a comment on how the two friends do the opposite. They spend the night speaking of Rama's qualities and come to a rest that speech cannot describe. Then Hanuman tells Vibhishana he wants to see Mother Janaki. Vibhishana explains the means, Hanuman takes leave, and he goes back into the Ashoka grove in the same form as before. He sees Sita sitting while the night watches pass. Her body is thin and her hair is a single matted braid. Her eyes rest on her own feet and her mind rests in Rama's feet, and in her heart she recites the line of Raghupati's virtues. Tulsidas gives the reason for Hanuman's grief in what he sees: Sita is in great distress, yet her remembrance of Rama has not moved.
A lamp stands in the window of a bare hut on a windy night. The flame is bent low and the glass is smoked, but it does not go out. Sita is that lamp: her body is worn down, and her attention on Rama stays lit.
