Meaning · English

Hidden in the tree's leaves, Hanuman wonders what to do. Ravana comes with many wives, pleads and threatens. Sita, a blade of grass between them, calls him a firefly and Rama the sun. Furious, he draws his sword.

Hanuman is hiding among the leaves and thinking, "What do I do, brother?" Then Ravana arrives, dressed up, with many women. Tulsidas says he tried sama, dama, bhaya and bheda: coaxing, gifts, fear and division. In plain words, he flatters, bribes, frightens and tries to turn her against Rama. He tells Sita that Mandodari and all the queens will become her servants, and asks her to look at him once. Sita answers with a blade of grass held between them, remembering Rama, her gentle protector. Reciters often read the grass as a screen: she will not look at him directly. She calls him dasamukha, ten-faced, and asks whether a lotus ever blooms by the light of a khadyota, a firefly. Rama is the sun, and Ravana is the firefly. She says he does not know the sound of Raghubir's arrow, and calls him a shameless thief who carried her off in Rama's absence. The doha closes the scene. Hearing himself called a firefly and Rama the sun, Ravana grows enraged and draws his sword. Tulsidas shows what Sita holds to when every offer and threat is turned on her.

A tall post stands in a flooding river. Branches, foam and mud hit it from every side, and the water splits and goes around. The post is Sita: the offers and threats rush at her, and her mind stays where it was.
