Meaning · English

Ravana: yield, or my sword takes your head. Sita: Rama's arms or your blade on my neck; sword, end my grief. Mandodari calms him. A month's deadline given, he leaves; the demonesses menace her in ugly forms.

Three words carry the verse. Apamana is insult, a loss of honour. Ravana says Sita has insulted him, and the word shows his anger is wounded pride. Kripana is a sword, and Ravana's sword is named Chandrahas, moon-laugh, for its pale shine. Pisacini is a female flesh-eater, and these are the demonesses set over Sita. Ravana opens with a threat: she has shamed him, and unless she gives in at once, his sword will cut off her head. Sita answers with a choice. Her husband's arms are lovely as a garland of blue lotuses and strong as an elephant's trunk. Only those arms, or Ravana's terrible sword, may rest on her neck. Then she speaks to the blade itself. Let it take away the torment that comes from being parted from Raghupati. She calls its cool, sharp edge a blessing, so death looks to her like relief from grief. Ravana rushes to kill her. Mandodari, daughter of Maya, calls him back and teaches him restraint. He orders the demonesses to terrify Sita, and gives her a month. If she has not obeyed by then, he will kill her with his sword. He goes home, and the demonesses take on many ugly shapes to frighten her. Tulsidas gives this moment so the reader sees how narrow her time has become. Her only answer is the same loyalty to Rama.

A tenant is handed a notice with one date circled on the calendar. The landlord's men loiter on the stairs to make the wait harder. The circled date is Ravana's month, and the men on the stairs are the demonesses.
